Businesses eye local presence in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Jamie Gaucher, director of the Middlebury Office of Business Development & Innovation, last week updated the Middlebury selectboard on economic development efforts in the shire town.

He reported, among other things, that a financing group based in North Carolina has asked for a financial estimate for a new Vermont Livestock headquarters in Middlebury’s industrial park.

Economic development pitches to be heard in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Economic Development Corp. (ACEDC) announces that Lt. Gov. Phil Scott is coming to Middlebury to hear from Addison County businesses, educators, students, local governments, social service agencies and others about prospects for improving Vermont’s economy.

Scott has been hosting a series of what he calls “economic pitch sessions” around the state, at which people present their ideas for economic prosperity.

Business director: Middlebury to welcome several new businesses

MIDDLEBURY — After two years of dipping Middlebury’s economic development hook in statewide and national waters, Jamie Gaucher is getting some nibbles and has even landed a couple of keepers.

Gaucher, two years into what will be at least a five-year stint as the director of the Middlebury Office of Business Development & Innovation, told participants at Monday’s town meeting about several new, small businesses poised to settle in town, with others waiting in the wings.

Car dealer Tom Denecker and his partner buy Shea Motors

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County now has one Chevrolet dealership.

On Dec. 12, Tom Denecker and partner Mike Capra, owners of Denecker Chevrolet in Ferrisburgh and Vergennes, completed their purchase of Middlebury’s Shea Motors, in a deal brokered by both dealerships’ parent company, General Motors.

Shea Motors owner Jerry Shea had been set to sell to a third party after 36 years on Route 7 south of Middlebury village, Denecker said, when GM exercised a standard right of first refusal and offered the same deal to Denecker and Capra.

Emerson Lynn’s editorial in the Nov. 27 issue of the Independent, “How do we grow if our political leadership balks?” is instructive regarding the anemic growth in Vermont’s economy and the shortfalls in state revenues. As Mr. Lynn notes, the pro-growth sentiment does not exist among Vermont’s political class.

Authors to promote locally owned bookshops

MIDDLEBURY — The locally owned Vermont Book Shop in Middlebury will host three authors as honorary booksellers this Saturday.

Hundreds of independent bookstores across the country will be hosting local authors this Saturday, Nov. 29, Small Business Saturday, thanks to a movement called Indies First. Launched by noted author Sherman Alexie in 2013, Indies First encourages authors to volunteer at their local bookstore, to give back some of the support that independent bookstores have traditionally given to authors.
