YarnAndYoga2518.jpg

BRISTOL — What do yarn and yoga have in common? Much more than you might think, it turns out.

A group of Addison County women are opening up a yarn shop and yoga studio — appropriately called simply “Yarn and Yoga” — on Bristol’s main drag that offers both of those things.

One of the group, Bristol resident Elissa Cobb, explained how yarn and yoga are, in fact, similar.

Posted on June 9, 2014 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Marquis Theater owner Bill Shafer hopes to reinvigorate Middlebury’s vintage movie house with a series of improvements that would include expanding food and beverage offerings, revamping two of the three screening areas to create more casual seating, and staging more live entertainment.

“I can’t survive anymore just serving Hollywood,” Shafer said of the theater’s current emphasis on screening major, new-release films.

MIDDLEBURY — She’s not quite 28 years old, but Jessica Pominville has been working in the movie business for around a decade — the movie rental business.

She managed three Blockbuster Video stores in Burlington, a Hollywood Video store, and a Movie Gallery outlet. For the past three years she’s been working at Video King on Washington Street in Middlebury.

When Video King owner Terry Pellegrino decided to close his doors earlier this year, Pominville saw an opportunity.

BRISTOL — Recycled Reading of Vermont is moving to a larger space in Bristol’s downtown, and will expand its operation.

The store, which sells used books, CDs, DVDs and musical instruments, isn’t moving far — in fact, the new space is just across the street from its current location at 25 Main Street. The store will occupy the space that used to house Better Planet.

Owner Melissa Hernandez, who opened the store in 2011, said things were starting to feel crowded in her shop, so she went looking for a new home for her business.

MIDDLEBURY — Chuck Burkins and Lars Hubbard met 17 years ago and began brewing beer together as a hobby. Next month, they hope to roll out their first barrel of whiskey at their new distillery in Middlebury.

“Distilling is something that’s fun, and we love things that taste good,” Hubbard said. “There’s chemistry involved. We had to do a lot of MacGyvering to make things work.”

Editorial: H.552 — House plan unravels state's pro-business efforts

Posted on April 10, 2014 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

The primary reason to phase in the minimum wage hike in Vermont from $8.73 per hour to $10.10 per hour over three years—instead of rushing to that level by Jan. 1, 2015 as House bill H-552 mandates—is so Vermont businesses can gradually adjust to the 15 percent hike in labor expenses and are not put at a disadvantage with neighboring states.

That argument, and the big-picture narrative that goes along with it, seems lost on many members of the House.

Opinion: Vermont economy isn't as great as politicans claim

Posted on February 10, 2014 |
By Jeff Provost

As I drove down the road the other day, headed from one commitment to the next, I was hit with a sudden, in-your-face realization about the current state of Vermont’s economy.

Sure, I’ve seen plenty of articles and reports providing contrasting doom and gloom and optimistic outlooks for our beloved Green Mountain State, but I never really knew exactly where we stood. Until now.
