Goodrich nets $54 million Army contract

VERGENNES — Goodrich Corp.’s Vergennes plant will benefit from the latest installment on a $300 million contract with the U.S. Army for the company’s Health and Usage Management Systems (HUMS), which are used to monitor the operating status of key engine and rotor parts on military and commercial helicopters, according to a Wednesday press release from Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.)

Waltham business cares for furry friends

WALTHAM — When Tonya Beer drove through Addison County last year, it occurred to her that it would be a great place to start a kennel.

“I started coming to this area, and everywhere I went I saw dogs,” she said.

Beer, who had co-owned a kennel in the Northeast Kingdom, moved to Addison County in November. She and Matt LaValley, the groomer at her kennel, had already discussed the possibility of opening a business together, and after the move LaValley came down to help look for a space.

Wool wholesaler closing shop

MIDDLEBURY — Only six months ago, the owner of Vermont Organic Fiber Co. (VOF) had high hopes of landing grant money that he said would have allowed him to expand operations and double his seven-person work force.

But last week saw VOF President Matthew Mole instead liquidating assets from the small Seymour Street-based enterprise he founded in 2000. Mole cited the recent recession and his inability to land critical economic development grants as the main reasons for his decision to close the wholesale supplier of yarns and fabrics made with certified organic wool.

Internet outage hinders local businesses

ADDISON COUNTY — Some FairPoint Communications customers early last week struggled with a break in Internet access due to a defective connection in the line.

FairPoint spokeswoman Sabina Haskell said that the company was alerted to the connection problems on the morning of Monday, April 26, when many Middlebury area customers called in with connection problems.

Middlebury's RetailVision to lay off around 20 workers

MIDDLEBURY — RetailVision will shed approximately 20 of its 70 Middlebury employees by this August, representatives of the Middlebury business’s parent company confirmed on Thursday.

The cuts, announced to affected workers last Wednesday, are being driven by the expiration of a contract with a firm that had been providing some warehousing and distribution services for RetailVision, which creates and manages specialty magazine sales programs for specialty retailers throughout the country.

Bristol family revives shop

BRISTOL — A Bristol couple looking to revitalize a Main Street business is overhauling Reed’s Auto Supply and hoping to draw customers to Bristol’s downtown.

The new Forand’s Auto Supply, owned by husband-and-wife team Cathleen and Eric Forand, opened in March. For the Forands, purchasing the store previously owned by Mike Reed offered the chance to work close to home, realize their dream of owning a small business, and improve a longstanding storefront on Bristol’s main drag.

Goodrich expanding workforce

VERGENNES — The current workforce at Goodrich Corp.’s Vergennes plant stands at 780, about 20 fewer than a year ago. But if the company’s local hiring plans work out, more workers will soon punch in and out on Panton Road than did in mid-2009, and the workforce could return to where it stood before layoffs began early last year.

Sol Mirelez, marketing communications manager of Goodrich’s Sensors and Integrated Systems division — which includes the Vergennes plant — said the company is now advertising for more help there.

Supercuts to open in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — The owners of The Centre plaza on Route 7 south confirmed last week that a Supercuts hair styling business will occupy a space in the shopping complex later this spring.

“I would expect them to open in around three months,” said Chris Hunt of Myron Hunt Inc., the company that owns The Centre.

The space in question is around 1,500 square feet and was previously occupied by a liquor store, according to Hunt.

Doria's Restaurant to leave Middlebury location

MIDDLEBURY — Doria’s Restaurant will be shutting its doors for good following close of business on Saturday, April 17, after a two-year run in the Battell Block on Middlebury’s Merchants Row.

Meanwhile, four separate parties have contacted Battell LLC, owners of the building, expressing interest in establishing a new enterprise in the high-profile downtown space.
