MIDDLEBURY — To tourists, the Champlain Bridge has for the past 80 years served as a convenient conduit from Vermont to New York state across Lake Champlain.

But the span has also served as a key funnel for economic activity in Addison County, ushering in hundreds of New Yorkers daily who work at area businesses and who shop at local stores.

FERRISBURGH — As many on both sides of the issue have said they expected, South Burlington firm Champlain Oil Co.’s controversial Ferrisburgh proposal for a Route 7 gas station, convenience store and fast food restaurant is headed to court.

Champlain Oil (COCO) and Friends of Ferrisburgh for Responsible Growth have both appealed to Environmental Court the Ferrisburgh’s Zoning Board of Adjustment’s Sept. 16 conditional approval of COCO’s planned 9-acre development at the former site of the Ferrisburgh Roadhouse.

MIDDLEBURY — A local nonprofit will soon launch a competition in which the winner will be the one to have accomplished the least.

Sounds strange? Yes — until one realizes that the participants’ objective is to consume the least amount of energy possible.

And that’s exactly what 15 local businesses have pledged to do during the next three months as part of “Middlebury Unplugged,” a challenge organized by the Vermont Community Foundation (VCF).

"Cow Power" producers suffer losses

Posted on October 1, 2009 |
By Kathryn Flagg

ADDISON COUNTY — Central Vermont Public Service’s “Cow Power” program, which enlists farms to convert manure to electricity using on-farm anaerobic digesters, has been lauded in recent years as a revolutionary way to generate renewable energy and support local farms.

But wholesale energy prices plummeted earlier this year. With Cow Power rates contractually tied to the price of wholesale energy, farmers participating in the fledgling program found themselves producing two commodities at a loss: milk and electricity.

Ferrisburgh OKs limited Route 7 development

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh Zoning Board of Adjustment has issued a conditional approval of a Champlain Oil Co. plan for a gas station, convenience store and fast-food restaurant on Route 7. But the approval came without elements of the proposal that COCO officials said were critical to their business plan: diesel fuel pumps and a drive-through window for the restaurant.

The board (ZBA) took that action on Sept. 16 and publicized it last week once COCO acknowledged it had received the ruling in the mail.

MIDDLEBURY —Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater (THT) last week was once again hosting a sizable audience.

But those assembled in THT’s sumptuous performance hall on Thursday were not taking in a play; they were learning about how to help returning soldiers and their families deal with the real-life drama of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other war-inflicted mental health issues.

State OKs private home-health provider; nonprofits voice concern

Posted on September 17, 2009 |

MIDDLEBURY — State officials on Monday gave the green light to a private, New Jersey-based home-health services provider to operate in Vermont, a scenario that some state nonprofits believe could bring more competition in an industry already beset with tight margins.

At issue is a successful effort from Bayada Nurses Inc. of Moorestown, N.J., to buy Professional Nurses Service Inc. (PNS) of Vermont, which in 2005 became the first private firm to be given state permission to compete against nonprofits for clients in the home health services industry.

Monahan Filaments to shutter Middlebury plant; county sheds 69 jobs

MIDDLEBURY — Citing reduced orders for its bristle products and growing competition, Monahan Filaments executives confirmed on Wednesday they will close the company’s Middlebury plant on Nov. 15, thereby ending employment for 69 full-time workers.

“We don’t have the business to support the facility,” said Brian Crawford, vice president and general manager of Monahan Filaments, which in 2007 bought the former Specialty Filaments business out of U.S. Bankruptcy Court.
