Champlain Bridge site to host new boat launch and more

MIDDLEBURY — About three years after the old Champlain Bridge was closed due to safety concerns, workers will soon begin the final phase of work on the new Lake Champlain Bridge project.

That work will involve upgrades to property on the Vermont side of the span to include construction of a new boat launch, two gravel parking lots and walking paths with interpretive signs.

Crowds turned out to watch the Champlain Bridge Grand Parade on May 19, but for some in the crowd, this wasn't the first time.

Art Clifford of Starksboro was just a boy in 1929, but he traveled over to Addison with his family to watch the festivities that opened up the first Champlain Bridge. He was one of the '29ers who attended this year, and he sat down with Robinson Elementary School students to chat about what life was like back in 1929.

Crowds turned out to celebrate the opening of the new Champlain Bridge over the weekend of May 19. The bridge opened to traffic in the late fall of 2011, two years after the old bridge was closed down due to safety concerns. The bridge reconnected a link between Vermont and New York 

The parade mimicked many elements the original opening parade in 1929, which was attended by then New York Governor Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Parade and fireworks to keynote weekend bridge party

WEST ADDISON — Around 10,000 people are expected to converge upon the new Lake Champlain Bridge this weekend for a celebration marking the restoration of the vital transportation link between Crown Point, N.Y., and Addison.

A group known as the Lake Champlain Bridge Community (LCBC) has spent many months planning the May 19-20 festivities, which will include a parade, entertainment, vendors and a fireworks display.

The Champlain Bridge opened to traffic on Monday, November 7, once again connecting Crown Point, N.Y. and West Addison, Vt. Throngs of people turned out to watch the inauguration of the new bridge, which was built in 21 months after the old bridge was deemed unsafe. Commuters and local business owners alike heralded the return of the bridge, which serves as a vital economic link between the two states.

Champlain Bridge is open!

WEST ADDISON — A legion of dignitaries and hundreds of residents from both sides of Lake Champlain marked the much-anticipated opening of the new Champlain Bridge on Monday afternoon.

Gov. Peter Shumlin and state Rep. Diane Lanpher, D-Vergennes, were among the Vermont delegates who helped cut the ribbon on the $76 million bridge that was two years in the making. The former Champlain Bridge, build in 1929, was abruptly closed on Oct. 16, 2009, after it was deemed to be unsafe for travel.

New Champlain Bridge opening set for Monday afternoon

WEST ADDISON  — New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office has confirmed that the new Champlain Bridge connecting West Addison to Crown Point, N.Y., will be officially opened on Monday, Nov. 7, following a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2:30 p.m., on the Crown Point side.

Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin and New York Lt. Gov. Robert Duffy are scheduled to be among those attending the festivities.

As crowds watch, two states again linked

ADDISON — After close to two years of separation, the shores of Crown Point, N.Y., and Addison, Vt., were once more connected last Friday when the center arch of the new Lake Champlain bridge was set in place.

And while there’s still a lot more work to be done before the bridge is completed, for the crowds that turned out to watch, the connection between the two states was a symbolic moment.

Update: Champlain Bridge arch move rescheduled for Friday

Due to predicted inclement weather, the New York State DOT has just announced the postponement of the scheduled installation of the arch for the Lake Champlain Bridge until Friday, August 26th.
