Vergennes men follow bridge from its birth to burial

ADDISON — Transportation officials have yet to set a specific date for the demolition of the Champlain Bridge, but its impending destruction is looming as perhaps the most keenly anticipated event in Addison since the day 80 years ago when a veritable who’s who of New York and Vermont politicians, businessmen and area residents marked the grand opening of the span on Aug. 26, 1929.

Lawmakers seek $1M in bridge aid

ADDISON — State and local lawmakers on Tuesday urged Gov. James Douglas to dedicate $1 million in federal stimulus funds to help Addison County businesses — including farms — that have taken a financial hit since the Champlain Bridge was closed on Oct. 16.

Douglas quickly endorsed the $1 million request, but said the money should be spent in the broader context of statewide, $8.6 million economic development package that includes some initiatives the Legislature rejected last session.

Ti Ferry extended through December 31

ADDISON — One Lake Champlain ferry will extend its run through the end of the year while another will pare back hours as New York and Vermont transportation officials continue to work on a temporary ferry service and explore the viability of a temporary span near the site of the closed Champlain Bridge.

Owners of the Ticonderoga Ferry confirmed this week that they will continue their extended run — weather permitting — from Shoreham to Ticonderoga, N.Y., through Dec. 31.

Bridge replacement set at $67 million

ADDISON — The cost for replacing the Champlain Bridge will be a minimum of $67 million and take at least 22 months to build, according to a preliminary report released last week by an engineering firm for the New York State Department of Transportation.

The assessment by HNTB New York Engineering and Architecture also analyzed the pros and cons of providing a temporary fix for the 2,187-foot span, and of rehabilitating the 80-year-old landmark.

Champlain Bridge to be torn down

ADDISON — Transportation officials from Vermont and New York on Monday announced that the Champlain Bridge that spans Lake Champlain between Addison, Vt., and Crown Point, N.Y., will be demolished.

The bridge was closed abruptly on Oct. 16 after an inspection of the 80-year-old bridge revealed structural deficiencies in two of its 11 concrete piers.

Ferry may be floated near champlain bridge

ADDISON — Vermont and New York transportation officials said on Wednesday they are “encouraged” by the potential of establishing a temporary ferry crossing of Lake Champlain near the now-mothballed Crown Point Bridge, a move that would aid commuters and throw an economic lifeline to area businesses who depend on pass-by traffic.

Meanwhile, engineers continue to evaluate locations on both sides of the lake that could accommodate a temporary bridge, including a spot at the former ferry landing off Crown Point Road in Bridport.

Citizens call for quick bridge fix

ADDISON — Around 200 people filled the Addison Central School gym on Tuesday to plead for a new lake crossing near the now-closed Champlain Bridge, a task they said New York and Vermont transportation officials should have accomplished many days ago.

Bridge update: Public meetings slated for Tuesday and Wednesday

ADDISON —The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) and Vermont Agency of Transportation this week will host two public information meetings regarding available transportation alternatives for crossing Lake Champlain and the plan to repair and reopen the Lake Champlain Bridge spanning from Chimney Point in Addison, Vt., to Crown Point, N.Y.
