Editorial: Parents to students — want to make an extra $500,000

In Vermont, it’s well known that our high school graduation rate is one of the highest in the country, while we rank toward the bottom among states in sending graduating seniors to higher education. Roughly 40 percent of high school graduates in Vermont do not go on to post-secondary education.

Part of the reason is money: A college-education is expensive and Vermont ranks among the least generous of states to subsidize those expenses for in-state students.

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont high school seniors with at least one college-educated parent are more likely to attend college than classmates who would be first-generation college students, a new report by the Vermont Student Assistant Corp. found.

A biannual survey by VSAC of a majority of the state’s high school seniors — including those in Addison County — revealed an “aspiration gap” between those who would be first- and second-generation college students.

VERGENNES — The efficacy of a high school is often measured by the percentage of graduates that go on to study at four-year colleges.

To an extent, research suggests, this may be a valuable statistic to consider. The wage gap between those with a high school diploma and those with a college degree is ever widening and higher education is now considered a prerequisite to greater career opportunities.

Greg Dennis: At a college reunion, ghosts of present and past

A woman takes her seat for a long train ride in a foreign country. She’s a plant biologist who travels the world to study and document rare plant species. It’s one more trip among many.

For the past two years, since her husband Michael died, she’s been traveling even more. Sometimes staying ahead of the pain, sometimes just learning to live with it. (This is a true story, though the names and some details have been changed to protect the principals’ identities.)

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College sophomore Yuki Takeda might seem just like any other student, whistling as he walks across campus.

But listen closely, and you may notice that his whistling is more ornate than most: Earlier this month, Takeda took third place in the adult male grand champion competition at the 39th International Whistlers Convention in North Carolina.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College will soon expand its renewable energy portfolio. Next month it will install 34 photovoltaic solar power collectors on the open swathe of 1.5-acre college land off Route 125, between McCardell Bicentennial Hall and the college organic garden.

The 143-kilowatt (kW) project, slated to go up in February, is expected to generate 200,000 kW-hours (kWh) of electricity per year, and will be metered against Battell Hall to offset the annual power consumption of the year-round dormitory, which annually uses about 190,000 kWh.
