MIDDLEBURY — On Monday night, 15 Middlebury College students and community members huddled in a windswept circle in front of the college library. The candles they held flickered and went out almost as soon as they lit them, but soon a handful of battery-operated candles surfaced. These stayed lit against the biting wind.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury native Olivier Knox spends a lot of time doing translation.
It’s not really language translation — although he is a correspondent for Agence France-Presse (AFP), the oldest and third-largest news agency in the world. He has worked as a journalist in Washington, D.C., since 1996, and writes his stories in English.

But the translation he does is cultural — explaining what goes on in Washington from an international perspective.

MIDDLEBURY — When Katherine Smith Abbott heard the news in 2005 that the Middlebury College Museum of Art was considering purchasing a 600-year-old Italian painting, she was elated. This was right up Smith Abbott’s alley.

An associate dean and a professor of art history at the college, Smith Abbott specializes in Italian Renaissance art. She knew that the college museum didn’t own any work from the Italian Renaissance, and she urged the museum’s director to consider the purchase, both because of its condition and the void it filled in the college collection.
