Death Race a unique test

PITTSFIELD — At 6 p.m. on Friday evenings, many of us are just leaving work and starting to look forward to a relaxing weekend.

At that time last Friday, Middlebury resident Don Devaney was just beginning the Spartan Death Race, a one-of-a-kind ultra endurance race that lasts almost two full days and combines grueling physical obstacles with challenging mental tasks.

MIDDLEBURY — The Death Race, a multi-day physical and mental challenge created five years ago by Middlebury resident Andy Weinberg, is designed to be the final word in extreme racing. Competitors are told when to show up but not given any specifics on the unique mix of grueling challenges scattered across the mountainous and forested terrain they will face.

MIDDLEBURY — What is the most extreme race  — marathon, triathlon, Iron Man?

Andy Weinberg has been there and done that, more times than he can count.

While an Iron Man race sounds like a challenge — it is comprised of 2.4 miles swimming, 112 miles biking, and 26.2 miles running — one look at Weinberg’s racing résumé is all one needs to understand the passion this Middlebury resident has for pushing himself to the peak of his ability.
