Bristol duo launches tandem clothing shops

BRISTOL — Tuesday marked the grand opening of two businesses sharing the same building at 22 Main St. in Bristol: The Enchanted Closet, Cathleen Forand’s resale and consignment store, and Selvage Yard, Julie Clark’s reclamation crafts, custom mending and repairs business.

Middlebury parcel comes into focus

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College and town officials are working on plans to create a legal entity able to field development offers for a 1.5-acre piece of property behind the Ilsley Library in downtown Middlebury.

The land in question is jointly owned by the town and college and has been identified as a logical spot for a mixed-use project that could draw more businesses and shoppers to the downtown area. A special committee was formed last year to oversee planning for the so-called Economic Development Initiative, also known as EDI.

Railroad span plan takes hit

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury officials’ hopes of seeing a speedy replacement of the deteriorating railroad bridges at Main Street and Merchants Row have been dealt a serious blow by tight state and federal finances.

Both of the bridges were built in 1920, and both are showing substantial signs of wear and tear as they continue to bear heavy traffic loads traveling through downtown Middlebury.
