Eagle field hockey falls; playoffs loom for teams

HINESBURG — Host Champlain Valley dealt the Mount Abraham Union High School field hockey team a 2-0 setback on Tuesday.

The Eagles dropped to 6-7, while CVU improved to 9-3-1 despite a combined seven saves from Eagle goalies Danielle Morse and Samantha Bruce. The Redhawks, locked into second place in Division I, will visit Middlebury on Thursday as the regular season concludes for both teams.

MIDDLEBURY — In the kind of battle that could help both teams prepare for the upcoming playoffs, the host Middlebury Union High School field hockey team on Friday made a beautiful early goal stand up against Mount Abraham’s second-half onslaught and won, 1-0.

Senecal quits as Mt. Abe football coach after 15 years with program

BRISTOL — After 15 years with the Mount Abraham Union High School football program, almost seven years as its head coach, Ernie Senecal resigned this past week.

Both Senecal and Mount Abe Co-Athletic Director Jeff Stetson cited “personal reasons.” But Senecal acknowledged that some of those reasons came because of “some of the things that have been said about me,” citing complaints about his leadership and treatment of some athletes, complaints that he said were unfair.

Field Hockey: Eagles, Otters win; Tigers tough but fall to Essex, 1-0

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school field hockey play in the latter half of last week, Mount Abraham stretched a winning streak, Middlebury gave undefeated Essex a battle in a loss, and Otter Valley posted two tight wins against Marble Valley League rivals.

Boys' soccer: Mt. Abe only area victors

ADDISON COUNTY — In area high school boys’ soccer play late last week, Mount Abraham broke through for a win, but Vergennes, Middlebury and Otter Valley came up short.

On Friday, the Eagles snapped their eight-game winless streak, 1-0. Charlie Meyer provided the offense with a first-half penalty kick, and goalie Nick Sczcecinski backed the Mount Abe defense with seven saves. Mount Abe improved to 3-6-2.

Local athletes compete at Thetford Woods Trail Run

THETFORD — A solid finish by the Middlebury Union High School boys highlighted local cross-country teams’ efforts at Saturday’s Thetford Woods Trail Run, a major midseason meet that drew five-dozen teams from around New England.

The Tiger boys placed five runners in the top third of the more than 800 finishers and took 16th, led by senior David Dregallo in 58th with a time of 18:26.92 of the 5K course. All five scoring Tiger runners finished in 19:20.82 or better and in at least 176th place.

Milton tops Mt. Abe in boys' soccer

BRISTOL — Visiting Milton topped the Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ soccer team on Tuesday, 3-1.

The Yellowjackets improved to 8-2-2 and are in third place in Division II, while the Eagles remained winless in their past nine outings and dropped to 2-7-2.

Ryan Brown, Colby Gay and Luke Covey scored for Milton, and goalie Hunter Goodwin made four saves.

Mt. Abe field hockey edges Colchester, snaps streak

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School field hockey team snapped its five-game losing streak on Tuesday by topping visiting Colchester, 1-0.

The Eagles earned a 14-1 advantage in shots on goal, but only Kennady Roy, with an assist from Bailey Sherwin, put a ball past Laker goalie Abby Ladd. Ladd stopped 13 shots in the losing cause as her team dropped to 0-8.

Mount Abe goalie Danielle Morse stopped the only shot she saw as the Eagles improved to 4-5.
