COLCHESTER — Last Wednesday afternoon, 34 students from across the state gathered at St. Michael’s College to compete for a chance to represent Vermont at the Scripps National Spelling Bee. And although 34 students — ages 7-15 — were present at the state bee, only 33 schools were represented.

Two of this year’s spellers came from the same school: Middlebury Union Middle School (MUMS).

ORWELL — Contract negotiations in the Addison-Rutland Supervisory Union are coming down to the wire, as teachers in that district announced on Friday that they would strike if school boards do not return to the table and reach a settlement by Wednesday.

Teachers in ARSU, which includes Orwell, Benson, Castleton and Fair Haven, have been working without a contract since July 2011 and are in the 15th month of negotiations on a new contract, having so far failed to reach a compromise. The supervisory union has imposed a pay freeze.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Union Middle School Principal Inga Duktig resigned last week, citing her readiness to “transition to the next chapter of my career as an educator.”

Duktig’s resignation takes effect on July 1, though Friday, March 9, was her last day on the job. That’s because she was granted a paid leave of absence for the balance of the academic year, according to Addison Central Supervisory Union interim Superintendent Gail Conley.

Middlebury's Gailer School to close doors

Posted on March 5, 2012 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The Gailer School, an innovative independent middle and high school in Middlebury, will close its doors for good this spring, with leaders citing declining enrollment and a strained budget as the primary reasons for the difficult decision.

“Between the struggling economy and the shrinking demographics of Addison County, it has made it really difficult for the private secondary school to recruit enough students,” said Gailer Headmaster Lonny Edwards.

ADDISON COUNTY — Last week’s release of the fall 2011 New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) scores had state and local educators eyeing a decidedly mixed batch of results.

Locally, Vergennes Union High School was the only high school to post significant increases in proficiency in all four subjects tested over 2010 results. Others achieved proficiency levels that, for the most part, declined or stayed the same.

Statewide, results also remained fairly stable compared to 2010.

Another ACSU executive leaves

Posted on February 16, 2012 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central Supervisory Union (ACSU) is in the market for yet another senior administrator. Associate Superintendent Jan Willey has tendered her resignation in a move she said was fueled by what she described as ongoing “turmoil” in the ACSU central office.

Willey’s departure, effective at the end of this academic year, is one of several administrative positions within the district that will be, or already have been, vacated during the past year under some strained circumstances.

LEICESTER — Forget about teaching writing for standardized tests.

These days at Leicester Central School, it’s all about the craft of creating essays, fiction and poetry.

In classes from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade at Leicester, and in some classes at Brandon’s Neshobe School, students are focusing on reading and writing in a different way: seeking out inspiration, getting into the flow of writing and, afterward, revising their efforts in workshops.
