VUHS seniors raise $6,000 for hospital in annual walk-a-thon

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School class of 2012 set a new fund-raising record for the seniors’ annual walk for charity this week, when on Tuesday the class presented a check for more than $6,000 to the Child Life Services program at Burlington’s Vermont Children’s Hospital, a division of Fletcher Allen Health Care.

Program promotes pedal-powered pupils

NEW HAVEN — The rapturous sounds of children bicycling carried across the leaf-scattered fields outside New Haven’s Beeman Elementary School last week, where students took advantage of 46 free bikes provided by Local Motion — the Burlington-based nonprofit promoting people-powered transportation — as part of its new Bike Smart Loaner Program.

For some students, it was a fun and insightful week of class with wellness teacher Patty Whittemore, but for others it was groundbreaking.

Science students excel in Italy

MODENA, ITALY — When members of Team U.S.A. returned on Sept. 16 from the fifth annual International Earth Science Olympiad in Modena, Italy, they brought home more medals than the Americans had previously won in the competition’s history.

Led by Mount Abraham Union High School physics teacher Tom Tailer and his wife, Beth, the team grabbed three bronze medals. Prior to this year, the U.S. team had only won one silver and one bronze medal in four years of competing in the national-team contests.

VERGENNES — Vergennes Union High School senior Ben Parsons said something unusual happened this past Wednesday, Sept. 21.

“The students in my morning meeting don’t stop talking for very long,” Parsons said. “They stopped talking while they watched the video.”

VERGENNES — Vergennes Union High School on Saturday surprised its former drivers’ education teacher, coach, groundskeeper and athletic director Roland Guyette — still a tireless contributor to the school 11 years after his formal retirement — by naming its athletics fields after him.

ACSU weighs option of second language

MIDDLEBURY — An Addison Central Supervisory Union (ACSU) committee will spend the next three months studying the feasibility of offering a second-language program to students throughout the seven-town school district.

Most students in the ACSU currently do not have access to second language instruction until grade 8, though Weybridge Elementary currently operates a successful Spanish program. Officials at Mary Hogan Elementary in Middlebury are also now exploring the prospect of offering a second language.
