By Tamara Hilmes and John S. McCright

BRISTOL — Representatives of the six Addison Northeast Supervisory Union school boards and of the teachers who work in those schools met into the wee hours last Thursday negotiating a contract for the current school year. By the end of the night the two sides had come to an impasse.

The school boards will meet next month to decide whether to restart negotiations or impose a contract. If they opt for the latter, the teachers will have to agree to take what the boards offer or strike.

Posted on December 9, 2010 |
By Tamara Hilmes

LINCOLN — After the Vermont education commissioner in September rejected the Lincoln Community School board’s $3.7 million bond proposal to pay for infrastructure improvements, the Building Committee returned to the drawing board. On Monday evening the board approved a scaled-back, $2 million version of the original proposal.

The bond will go to a vote on Jan. 18, and a public information meeting on Jan. 11, for discussion between the board and Lincoln residents, whose taxes will increase for the next 20 years if the bond is approved.

Posted on December 9, 2010 |
By Lee J. Kahrs

SUDBURY — The people of Sudbury have spoken, and the town elementary school will continue to teach all 20 students it serves.
Residents voted 110-39 to keep the k-6 Sudbury Country School open on Monday night following a two-hour information meeting held by the Sudbury school board. The vote was scheduled after a petition was presented to the board on Oct. 11 asking voters to consider shuttering the school due to falling enrollment and tuitioning students to other area schools.

Career Center eyes packaged programs

Posted on December 2, 2010 |
By Andrea Suozzo

MIDDLEBURY — Change is coming to the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center in Middlebury.
In recent years, enrollment in adult education programs at the technical center has taken a hit, said director Lynn Coale.

He said that a combination of reduced funding for the center’s adult education programs and a lack of funding for students hoping to take courses at the technical center has yielded an overall enrollment decline.

“We’re a fairly small tech center, compared to Rutland or Essex,” said Coale. “I think that we always struggle trying to keep the doors open in continuing education.”
