MIDDLEBURY — Most elementary school students would not have the slightest idea what to do in a college biology lab.

But seeing his 4- and 7-year-old daughters in the lab was exactly what inspired Middlebury College biology professor Jeremy Ward to apply for a National Science Foundation grant to teach genetic biology to schoolchildren in Addison County.

“They don’t know that they’re not supposed to be able to do it,” said Ward of his daughters. “When I watch (them) in here and say ‘Do this,’ they go and do it.”

Federal bill may offer schools aid

ADDISON COUNTY — A federal jobs bill passed by the U.S. House this week allocates just over $19 million to prevent potential layoffs of Vermont public employees — most of whom would be teachers. It provided a glimmer of hope for officials at local schools this week as they began to grapple with a mandate last week by Vermont Education Commissioner Armando Vilaseca to cut school spending in Vermont by more than $23 million in fiscal year 2012.

RNeSU rethinking lunchtime

Posted on June 24, 2010 |
By Andrea Suozzo

BRANDON — Next year, students at the Whiting Village School will probably no longer have to pack their lunches.

Instead, a new foodservice contract that is being negotiated within the Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union (RNeSU) could allow Whiting Village School for the first time to offer its students nutritious, in-school breakfasts and lunches.

ADDISON COUNTY — Springtime in teacher Jan Davis’ classroom comes with a bang. Her third-grade students at the Monkton Central School year after year count down the days to “Hatch Day,” when their incubated chicken eggs will crack open to reveal tiny chicks.

Hatch Day is the culmination of an embryology unit meant to teach students about the development of cells and eggs.

“It really is a favorite unit of both the kids as well as the other students in the school, because they know chicks are coming,” Davis said. “There’s a real excitement in the air.”

BRISTOL — School officials at Mount Abraham Union High School are bucking the cost-saving trend at some Vermont schools to privatize food services, instead opting for the ambitious plan to build from scratch a homegrown cooperative that could, in time, expand to serve elementary schools in the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union.

VERGENNES — As Lisa Sprague enters a classroom at Vergennes Union Elementary School carrying a bundle of freshly harvested vegetables, she is confronted with a throng of students hoping to help her do whatever is necessary to make the food ready to eat.

Such a scene has become not uncommon for Sprague, the food service manager at VUES. The school recently kicked off the second year of its student garden, which not only produces food for the school lunch program but also gives students hands-on lessons in many subject areas.

VERGENNES — The students of the Vergennes Union High School class of 2010 were not alone as they marched into the standing-room-only school gymnasium last Friday evening. The institution’s 50th graduating class was followed by more than half the members of the class of 1960 — VUHS’s first graduating class.

“There were 60 members in the class of 1960, and it is fitting that they should share the birthday milestone of 50 years this evening,” said Ann Sullivan, a former VUHS English teacher and 1960 alumna who took the floor to wish the students well.

BRISTOL — The grandest entrances are usually reserved for the senior prom.

Not this year at Mount Abraham Union High School, where commencement speakers Geoff Booth and Caroline Camara roared up to the graduation stage on Saturday atop a Harley Davidson motorcycle and delivered a high-octane message to the 149 member of the class of 2010.
