ACSU budgets hit hard by state aid calculation

Posted on January 11, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The UD-3 school board will hold a special budget meeting this Tuesday, Jan. 12, to discuss new education funding information from the state that indicates the seven towns in the Addison Central Supervisory Union could be in store for even worse budget news than they had anticipated.

Leicester nears school budget spending plan

Posted on January 11, 2010 |
By Andrea Suozzo

LEICESTER — Taxpayers in Leicester will be relieved to hear that town school directors are on track to propose a level-funded Leicester Central School spending plan for the 2010-2011 school year.

On Wednesday the board will meet to vote on the proposed budget. And although the past couple years have brought bad news for the school, with several failed efforts to consolidate with schools in neighboring towns and building maintenance woes, school board chair Hannah Sessions was optimistic last Friday.

Principal steps down at OVUHS

Posted on January 7, 2010 |
By Lee J. Kahrs

BRANDON — He said he never thought he’d be a school superintendent, but Otter Valley Union High School Principal Dana Cole-Levesque has accepted an offer from the Rutland South Supervisory Union (RSSU) to take over the helm later this year.

Cole-Levesque, 59, announced his resignation from OV effective in June at the school finance committee meeting last week.

“I’m very fortunate,” he said in an interview Monday. “It certainly is going to be a change, but it is a similarly sized supervisory union.”

Mt. Abe may trim three positions to cut costs

Posted on January 7, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

BRISTOL — Scrambling to cobble together an unexpected $475,000 in spending cuts, the Mount Abraham Union High School board of directors Tuesday reviewed preliminary cost savings that include eliminating three staff positions as well as trimming funding for maintenance and technology spending.

The cuts come after the board discovered last month that an accounting mistake would in many ways send administrators back to square one to draft the high school’s 2010-2011 spending plan, all while grappling with an unexpected deficit nearing $500,000.

Lincoln board decides against floating school bond

Posted on January 4, 2010 |
By Kathryn Flagg

LINCOLN — The Lincoln school board last week decided to postpone a bond to fund school repairs, pushing back a possible vote on the bond until at least March 2011.

The Dec. 21 decision came after several weeks of hasty discussions regarding possible repairs to the Lincoln Community School’s aging building, which the board discussed for several hours with community members at a well-attended Dec. 16 public meeting.

Pupil count falls at OV, budget looks grim

Posted on December 30, 2009 |
By Lee J. Kahrs

BRANDON — The Otter Valley Union School Board must feel like Sisyphus, a mortal in Greek mythology who was cursed to ceaselessly roll a huge boulder up a hill, only to watch it roll back down, and to repeat this throughout eternity. Such is the effort to fund local schools in the face of state tax increases and unfunded mandates.

The first public meeting on the proposed OV budget for 2010-2011 was held in the school auditorium on Dec. 16. While only about 12 people were in attendance, expect that number to grow in the coming weeks.

MIDDLEBURY — Jugs that, once upon a time, held vast quantities of mayonnaise top the tall, slender windmill in Middlebury Union High School math teacher Jay Harrington’s classroom. But just like the rest of this sculpture — cobbled together from recycled materials ranging from an old computer hard drive to pieces of a bed frame — the mayonnaise jars aren’t what they used to be, trading in their job as ho-hum food containers for the much more exciting role of windmill blades.

Declining enrollment hits Addison Central

Posted on December 30, 2009 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

ADDISON — Addison Central School officials have scheduled a Jan. 7 budget forum to explain to residents how their taxes could go up dramatically next year unless the ACS board slashes its draft 2010-2011 school budget deeply — much further than the lower spending that the board has considered already. Cuts on the table would affect ACS programs and employees.

Career center budget features tuition rate drop

Posted on December 23, 2009 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — An anticipated spike in enrollment will allow the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center (PHCC) board to present voters with a 2010-2011 spending plan that would result in a slight decrease in the per-pupil assessment charged to sending towns.

The PHCC offers career and technical education to students enrolled in the Addison Central, Addison Northeast and Addison Northwest supervisory unions. The career center operates programs at its headquarters adjacent to Middlebury Union High School, at its “North Campus” in Middlebury’s industrial park, and at Vergennes Union High School.

Teacher puckers up for 'Peanut Butter' kiss

Posted on December 23, 2009 |
By Kathryn Flagg

web_cowkisser.jpg

BRISTOL — With temperatures hovering near zero degrees, Peanut Butter’s breath sent little clouds of vapor out into the air beside the Bristol Elementary School gym Tuesday morning. The five-month-old Hereford calf from New Haven’s Cloverset Farm danced around the school’s parking lot, tossing the head upon which sat a festive little Santa’s cap.

In just a few minutes, Peanut Butter would trot through the door to the gym, eye the crowd of delighted schoolchildren, and then parade to the front of the gym for her big debut in the “Kiss the Cow” raffle at the elementary school.
