Second horse dies from EEE; state urges livestock vaccinations

VERMONT — State officials are urging all horse owners in Vermont to get their animals vaccinated against Eastern equine encephalitis after they determined last week that a second horse in Franklin County died from the mosquito-borne disease.

State to combat EEE virus with aerial spraying in Whiting area

WHITING — The state will perform two courses of aerial pesticide spraying in Whiting in the coming days in a pre-emptive strike to combat Eastern equine encephalitis.

Vermont Health Commissioner Dr. Harry Chen announced the move on Tuesday, saying that mosquito pools in Whiting are continuing to test positive for the EEE virus. The first positive tests were discovered Aug. 9. Since then, health officials have started testing twice a week and the news is not good.

WHITING — Eastern equine encephalitis, the new normal, is back.

For the second consecutive summer, the EEE virus has been detected in area mosquitoes, and health officials are urging vigilance against mosquito bites.

ADDISON COUNTY — Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus has been detected in a mosquito pool collected on Aug. 1 from the Whiting area in southern Addison County, the Vermont Department of Health reported on Friday.

EEE research clinic to be held Wednesday in Whiting

BRANDON — The last of three Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus (EEE) research study clinics will be held this Wednesday, May 29, from noon to 7 p.m. at the Whiting Town Hall.

The first two clinics, held in April and early May at the Brandon Senior Center and Sudbury Town Hall, were well attended. A total of 316 volunteers have donated blood samples that will be tested for antibodies to EEE.

BRANDON/WHITING/SUDBURY — The Vermont Department of Health late this month and next will hold three clinics locally to collect human blood samples that will be tested in a new study of Eastern equine encephalitis, or EEE.

State officials to Whiting-area residents: Please take EEE tests

WHITING — State health officials hope to conduct blood tests on area residents and determine how many people may possess the Eastern equine encephalitis antibodies without ever having gotten sick. That’s the message from a series of three public information meetings they held in the area to update residents in the wake of the first two human cases of EEE over the summer.

Depending on funding, there is also a plan to expand mosquito surveillance next year and hire additional field assistants to help gather samples.
