CORRECTION: Sen. Peter Shumlin, D-Putney, received 41 votes in Ripton for the Aug. 24 Democrat primary for governor, not the mere four tallies reported in the Thursday, Aug. 26, edition of the Addison Independent. This means that Shumlin notched a total of 1,395 votes in Addison County, not the 1,356 previously reported. This total of 1,395 means that Shumlin was in fact the top vote-getter in the county, narrowly eclipsing Hartland Democrat Matt Dunne’s 1,372 tallies.

NEW HAVEN/STARKSBORO — Rep. Chris Bray, D-New Haven, and Starksboro Republican Mark Snelling finished on the losing end of their respective party’s primary races for lieutenant governor, but voters have likely not heard the last from the two candidates.

“For my first statewide race coming from a small town in Addison County, I’m pleased at how close I was,” Bray, a two-term House incumbent said in reaction to his loss, by 52 percent to 48 percent of the vote, to Rep. Steve Howard, D-Rutland City.

Giard, a three-term incumbent, defeated Sheldon 845-757, based on write-in returns from the 23 Addison County towns and Brandon that make up the two-seat senatorial district.

VERGENNES — While a five-person contest for the Democrat nomination for governor is garnering much of the election headlines leading up to Vermont’s Aug. 24 primary, U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., is not taking lightly his quest for another six-year term.

Leahy, the country’s second longest-serving U.S. senator (almost 36 years), faces a primary of his own this Tuesday against Daniel Freilich of Wilmington. The winner of that race will face Pomfret Republican Len Britton in the Nov. 2 election.

Local House, Senate races highlight ballot

MIDDLEBURY — A Republican runoff in the Addison-4 House district; a write-in campaign for the state Senate; two local men vying for lieutenant governor; and a five-way race for the Democratic nomination for governor should give Addison County residents extra incentive to show up at the polls for Tuesday’s primary election.

Voter participation is notoriously low for mid-term elections, and Vermont officials are particularly concerned about light turnout this year because of a particularly early primary date.

FERRISBURGH — If voters in the five towns of the Addison-3 district value persistence, maybe this could be the year for Ferrisburgh Democrat Liz Markowski.

Markowski, 61, a businesswoman who played a key role in the late-1990s revitalization of downtown Vergennes, has put her name before voters three times in seeking one of Addison-3’s two seats in the Vermont House of Representatives — in 2002, 2004 and 2006.

Next Tuesday is one of the most important primary elections in Vermont’s recent history. Of the six state offices, four have competitive races. Five Democrats are vying for the right to confront Republican Brian Dubie in gubernatorial race. Two Democrats and two Republicans are in a party run-off in the lieutenant governor’s race and the secretary of state race; two Democrats are vying for the state auditor of accounts position to confront Republican incumbent Tom Salmon. Add to that a competitive three-way race among Republicans for the congressional seat held by Democrat incumbent Rep.
