Politically Thinking: Beating Dubie — tough but possible

Posted on June 24, 2010 |
By Eric L. Davis

Vermont’s primary election is just two months away. Whichever of the five Democratic gubernatorial candidates wins the primary will face a challenging campaign against Republican Brian Dubie. Dubie can start his general election campaign over the summer, while the Democrats battle each other in the primary. With more than $800,000 already on hand, Dubie should be able to raise $1.5 million. The eventual Democratic nominee will need to catch up to Dubie in fund-raising.

MIDDLEBURY — Last Thursday’s filing deadline for candidates vying for Vermont House and Senate seats produced some familiar local political names from the past along with the conspicuous absence of a prominent incumbent.

Information culled from the Vermont Secretary of State’s Office reveals there will be contested races in three of the county’s six House districts, including a Republican primary in Addison-4.

MIDDLEBURY — It would be an understatement to say it has been a busy June for Democrat gubernatorial candidate Matt Dunne.

Last week saw the Hartland native and Google executive making campaign stops in Burlington, the Mad River Valley, Norwich, Middlebury and St. Johnsbury.

On Tuesday, June 14, Dunne and his wife Sarah Taylor brought a baby daughter, Cora Leah Lawrence Dunne, into the world.

Editorial: Dunne: Unique position gives candidate fresh perspectives

Posted on June 17, 2010 |
By Angelo Lynn

In the race for governor, Democratic candidate Matt Dunne stands alone in the crowd for one clear reason: He is outside the political beltway — the other four Democrats and Republican Brian Dubie are entrenched in state politics and have been for a long time. The question is whether that’s a help or hindrance, and many analysts, as well as Dunne himself, see it as a major plus.

Douglas reflects on final session, legacy and next chapter

Posted on June 3, 2010 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — It’s early June during an election year in Vermont, which means Gov. James Douglas should be in full campaign mode right now.

But for the first time in more than three decades, the Middlebury Republican finds himself on the sidelines of a crowded candidates’ field that he helped populate with three simple words last August: “I’m not running.”

Douglas recently sat down at the Addison Independent offices to reflect on the recently concluded Legislative session — his last in the governor’s office — his legacy, and what he might do in the future.

At college, Dems talk issues in governor's race

MIDDLEBURY — “This chair is leaning slightly to the left,” said state Sen. Peter Shumlin (D), waiting for a replacement on the stage of Middlebury College's Dana Auditorium last Sunday. “But so do I.”

His statement garnered a laugh from the audience gathered for a debate between the five democratic gubernatorial candidates for August’s primary elections. Though it was a sunny, warm afternoon, the candidates spoke to a full auditorium — more than 200 townspeople, college students and local politicians filled the space.

Ripton man confirms Senate bid

RIPTON — Ripton resident Robert Wagner confirmed on Thursday that he will run as an independent candidate for one of Addison County and Brandon’s two seats in the Vermont Senate.

Wagner, 46 describes himself as fiscal conservative who is liberal on social issues. He is running as an independent because he doesn’t see eye-to-eye with the major, established parties on a variety of issues, ranging from taxation to the future of Vermont’s statehood.

NEW HAVEN — Rep. Christopher Bray, D-New Haven, confirmed this week that he will run for lieutenant governor this November, entering a field of candidates that already includes another Addison County resident, Republican Mark Snelling of Starksboro.

Bray, 54, said he is running primarily to give farm issues a more prominent forum in Montpelier. Bray, a two-term incumbent legislator representing the Addison-5 district on the House Agriculture Committee, is excited about the new challenge he has decided to take on.

Freidlich announces Senate run against Leahy

MIDDLEBURY — As a physician and a military man, Dr. Daniel Freidlich of Wilmington believes he has the right stuff to deliver remedies for health care reform and the war on terror, among other issues simmering in the nation’s capital.

And Freidlich clearly isn’t shying away from a big battle. The Democrat has decided to force a primary with none other than longtime incumbent U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., next fall. Not only that, it’s Freidlich’s first foray into politics.

MONTPELIER — Gov. James Douglas’ legacy will be that of a very mobile, skilled politician who was able to maintain allegiance of the state’s conservative voting block while deftly appealing to mainstream voters as well as fiscally conservative Democrats.
