McKibben speaks on global warming and the election

Ripton resident Bill McKibben is the founder of 350.org, a global grassroots movement working to solve the climate change crisis, and Shumann Distinguished Scholar at Middlebury College. The award-winning journalist has spent more than two decades writing about global warming.

Incumbents win in uncontested elections

ADDISON COUNTY — In addition to the contested races for seats in the Vermont House of Representatives, voters in several Addison County towns returned incumbent lawmakers to the House in three uncontested elections.

Winning two-year terms representing the two-seat Addison-1 district were Democratic Reps. Paul Ralston and Betty Nuovo of Middlebury. Also, Democratic Reps. Michael Fisher and David Sharpe won re-election in Addison-4 (Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton and Starksboro).

We congratulate the Planning Commission and the Bristol selectboard for working through a litany of issues and, after eight years and a rejection of the previous town plan, proposing a plan the public can finally support.

In the race for president, set aside everything you know about the two candidates for a moment and reflect on the country you want to live in. Is it a country whose foundation is to strengthen the whole, or to strengthen the individual? Is it a country willing to help those less fortunate or do all Americans fend for themselves? Is it a country that employs a tax policy that seeks to spread wealth, or is it a country that favors a growing gap between rich and poor?

ANwSU towns to vote on $6.5M VUHS bond

VERGENNES — Residents of the five Addison Northwest Supervisory Union towns on Tuesday will decide whether to support a $6.5 million bond that will fund repairs and major upgrades to Vergennes Union High School.

The biggest ticket items are improvements to the school’s auditorium, installation of a track and an artificial turf playing field, upgrades to the kitchen and cafeteria, and roof repairs to several areas of the building.

After gravel compromise, Bristol plan goes to vote

BRISTOL — After eight years of debate, discussion and discord, the Bristol Town Plan will be on the ballot and back in the voters’ hands on Election Day, Nov. 6. The Bristol Planning Commission and the Bristol selectboard, which added 42 changes to the draft given to them by the planning commission based on input from public hearings, unanimously approved the latest version.

Locals stump for Obama in N.H.

MIDDLEBURY — A group of Addison County Democrats is logging some substantial travel miles to make New Hampshire a little bluer in advance of the Nov. 6 general election, hoping to deliver what some see as a toss-up state into the column of President Barack Obama over Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

Editorial: Endorsements, but first, let’s make Election Day a holiday

Election Day should be a national holiday simply to encourage as many American citizens as possible to make it to the polls and vote. Why not? Certainly it’s a more important day than, say, Columbus Day. Ideally, voters would use at least part of the day to make a final review of the candidates. Everyone knows something about the presidential race, but a good many Americans don’t know much about some of the state offices or the differences between the candidates for their state legislatures.

Politically Thinking: State’s D.C. incumbents will roll

Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Peter Welch are overwhelming favorites to be re-elected next week. These two candidates may get more votes than anyone else listed on the ballot, including President Obama and Gov. Shumlin. Sanders could be the top vote-getter in Vermont, with about 70 percent of the vote, with Welch not far behind in the mid-60 percent range.
