MIDDLEBURY — It was almost two years ago that Beth Pearce was appointed to the position of state treasurer.

Now the Barre Democrat wants to earn the job at the polls on Nov. 6, when she faces Republican challenger Wendy Wilton, the Rutland City treasurer (see relates story).

MIDDLEBURY — Rutland City Treasurer Wendy Wilton likes a challenge. So after helping her hometown get its once-disheveled fiscal house in order, the Rutland Republican now has her sights set on the state treasurer’s office. On Nov. 6, she hopes to unseat incumbent state Treasurer Beth Pearce, a Barre Democrat (see related story).

“This is the first time the treasurer’s office has been a competitive race in 20 years,” Wilton said during a recent interview with the Addison Independent. “There are some big issues at stake.”

Editorial: Pearce for state treasurer

Posted on October 29, 2012 |
By Angelo Lynn

When casting a vote for State Treasurer on Election Day, Vermonters should first consider what qualities, skills and background are most important in the candidates. The position, after all, has three primary responsibilities: managing the state’s bonds, managing the state’s pension funds, and handling a host of cash management tasks.

Sounds boring to most of us, which is one of the reasons that this race is rarely controversial.

Ripton's Wagner to highlight tax reform in second senate run

Posted on July 26, 2012 |

RIPTON — Robert Wagner, an independent candidate from Ripton, likens his second run for one of Addison County and Huntington’s two state Senate seats to going for a job interview.

Only in this case, he must be evaluated by around 36,000 “bosses” who will determine this November whether to hire him for a two-year stint in Montpelier.

He might not make it to every household in Addison County, but Wagner, 48, vowed to do his best.

ADDISON COUNTY — Addison County, Huntington and Buel’s Gore voters will elect at least one new state senator this November, and that person will either be a Democrat or an independent candidate.

Those filing at the courthouse were incumbent Sen. Claire Ayer, D-Addison, and fellow Democrat Christopher Bray of New Haven.

BRIDPORT — Sen. Harold Giard, D-Bridport, who has represented Addison County and Brandon in the state senate for the past eight years, will not seek a fifth consecutive term in the state’s highest chamber this November.

Giard confirmed this news during an interview with the Addison Independent late Wednesday afternoon. He said his decision was made out of respect for Vermont’s citizen Legislature and out of a desire to allow someone else to serve in a role he has found so fulfilling during the past eight years.

Area voters mirror state GOP trend

Posted on March 12, 2012 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

ADDISON COUNTY — Addison County and Brandon results for Tuesday’s Republican presidential primary essentially mirrored those from around Vermont: A plurality of voters backed former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, but the GOP frontrunner failed to win the outright majority his campaign had sought in state that neighbors his own.

In Addison County and Brandon, Romney led with about 37.2 percent of the vote, trailing his statewide number of 39.8 percent. Romney won Brandon and 16 of the county’s 23 towns.
