MIDDLEBURY — On a recent summer evening, some 25 people gathered at 51 Main to celebrate all things “green,” especially biking.

The June 21 event was the first local installment of Green Drinks, a loosely organized network of environmental meetups that take place around the world.

Local organizers said the events are designed to be informal social opportunities for “people who work or aim to be involved in green efforts or jobs in business, academia, government and nonprofits.”

MIDDLEBURY — A severe algae problem is poisoning the nation’s sixth largest body of water.

Blooms of the toxic blue-green organism growing in Lake Champlain are essentially large, poisonous colonies of photosynthetic bacteria that are caused by high levels of phosphorus and nitrogen nutrients. According to the Vermont Department of Health, algae-contaminated water in the lake led to the deaths of two dogs in 1999 and 2000.

MIDDLEBURY —Middlebury officials on Tuesday reported continuing progress in talks aimed at advancing a small-scale hydroelectric project at the Otter Creek Falls.

The Holm family has been seeking to install a water turbine that would harness electricity from the creek as it flows through a flume under a downtown building (owned by the Holms) that borders the south side of the Otter Creek Falls. It is a project that could generate more than 1 megawatt of electricity — enough to power the downtown area, according to Anders Holm.

ADDISON COUNTY — Until early this year, plastic disposal was not an issue that Ferrisburgh resident Ann Poskas had to think too hard about.

When Casella Waste Systems discontinued its plastic bag recycling program, stating that the thin film clogged its systems, Poskas began storing her bags.

Like others who heat their homes with wood pellets that are delivered in plastic bags — which problematically for recyclers are dusty inside and like other plastic bags therefore hard to handle — Postas quickly noticed those bags began to add up.
