NEW HAVEN — When a group of churchgoers met at the United Reformed Church of New Haven on Feb. 1, they discovered that kerosene had sullied their place of worship. Approximately 800 gallons of the fuel burst from a storage tank in the church’s attic, dousing rooms in thick, toxic petroleum, and shutting the building down for services.

Two months later they are still dealing with the spill.

Middlebury officials, developer progress in hydro talks

Posted on March 28, 2011 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY —Middlebury officials on Tuesday reported continuing progress in talks aimed at advancing a small-scale hydroelectric project at the Otter Creek Falls.

The Holm family has been seeking to install a water turbine that would harness electricity from the creek as it flows through a flume under a downtown building (owned by the Holms) that borders the south side of the Otter Creek Falls. It is a project that could generate more than 1 megawatt of electricity — enough to power the downtown area, according to Anders Holm.

Pellet bag disposal raises environmental questions

Posted on March 17, 2011 |
By Andrea Suozzo

ADDISON COUNTY — Until early this year, plastic disposal was not an issue that Ferrisburgh resident Ann Poskas had to think too hard about.

When Casella Waste Systems discontinued its plastic bag recycling program, stating that the thin film clogged its systems, Poskas began storing her bags.

Like others who heat their homes with wood pellets that are delivered in plastic bags — which problematically for recyclers are dusty inside and like other plastic bags therefore hard to handle — Postas quickly noticed those bags began to add up.

MIDDLEBURY — A poem about an old Vermont farmhouse and a sustainability-inspired haiku — this is what Middlebury College students have envisioned for an upcoming collaborative project that will get the students and community members working together.

While architecture and physics students muse over the best way to create a solid envelope out of plywood and insulation in an attempt to bring home the gold at the Solar Decathlon competition next fall, two students are thinking more outside the box.

MIDDLEBURY — Though Middlebury College’s month-long J-Term has a reputation for being a rather laid-back time of year, the students heading up the college’s Solar Decathlon team have been even busier than usual this January.

Just last week, several students made the trip down to Orlando, Fla., for a Solar Decathlon conference and to attend the International Builders’ Show. And on Tuesday, the team gathered to host a fund-raising event at the Middlebury night spot 51 Main.

MIDDLEBURY — Those working in Middlebury College’s sustainability office are feeling a bit more “chipper” this week.

On Tuesday, Middlebury College employees began harvesting the first batch of wood chips from its willow test plot in two fields to the west of the campus off Route 125, bringing the school’s biomass plant one step closer to processing its own wood fuel.

Bristol quarry denied ACT 250 permit

Posted on July 29, 2010 |
By John McCright

BISTOL — The efforts by the Lathrop Limited Partnership and Jim Lathrop to site a gravel pit on a 65-acre tract off Notch Road and Rounds Road in Bristol were dealt a setback on Tuesday when the District 9 Environmental Commission denied the project an Act 250 permit.

The commission ruled the proposal, which has been tied up in permitting and litigation for around seven years, “would cause and result in a detriment to public health, safety or general welfare.”
