Bristol conservationists look to protect bat habitat

BRISTOL — Conservationists in Bristol are looking to protect a 194-acre parcel of land in the northwest corner of town, which they say provides a large chunk of habitat for the Indiana bat, Vermont’s only federally endangered mammal.

The parcel would also extend the scope of the Waterworks, a 664-acre park conserved in the 1990s by the Watershed Center, a Bristol non-profit that converted the land from the one-time Vergennes City reservoir into a popular recreational and wildlife refuge on Plank Street.

Snow geese population at Addison refuge plummets

Posted on October 26, 2009 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

ADDISON — The numbers of snow geese making annual stops at Addison’s Dead Creek Wildlife Management Area have dropped dramatically in the past decade, according to a Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department official who staffs the site.

This fall, the count of snow geese at the Route 17 location peaked at about 2,500, said department wildlife biologist David Sausville. That’s down from roughly 7,500 in 2006 and 2007 and from an estimated 20,000 in the year 2000.

Instead, Sausville said, more snow geese are congregating in corn stands in southern Canada and northern Vermont and New York.

We shouldn’t even have to tell you where you’re having lunch this Saturday, Oct. 24, or what you’re bringing. You should already know. I’m bringing a pot of hot pumpkin soup and maybe my apple crisp, the kind with the crunchy topping flavored with maple syrup. Can’t beat it when it’s hot. Where are we going? To the gigantic Middlebury potluck lunch, and while the food will be delicious, the cause is the driving force.

ADDISON COUNTY — This Saturday, Oct. 24, people will be cycling through the streets of Kitale, Kenya. In Beirut, Lebanon, others will ride buses handing out flyers. The people of Chitral, Pakistan, will play an all-day game of freestyle polo. And in towns throughout Addison County, people will eat, ride bikes, drum and ring church bells.

The cause that unites these far-flung events is climate change. The vehicle: 350.org, an organization started close to home, in Middlebury.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College and Middlebury town officials have abandoned preliminary plans announced this spring to build a community biomass-fired power plant that would have powered college and town facilities. But representatives from the town and the college are gearing up instead to explore a new collaboration for a “biomass purchasing cooperative” and community renewable energy fund.

MIDDLEBURY — The idea came to Amy Sheldon when she was living in Middlebury and walking to Chipman Hill each morning before coming to work. Sheldon noticed that, more often than not, she was the only person using the small stretch of trail in east Middlebury.

Big plans in store for Middlebury trail: MALT foresees national collaboration

web_tamgrasstrail.jpg

MIDDLEBURY – Plans are afoot to connect the Trail Around Middlebury (TAM) with other networks, and some of these plans could allow a neighborhood walk to turn into a cross-country trek.

Josh Phillips is the executive director of the Middlebury Area Land Trust, which maintains the TAM. Recently he contracted with the U.S. National Park Service to conduct a feasibility study for creating a trail through Addison Country. The trail would connect Crown Point, N.Y., with the Long Trail, linking the North Country National Scenic Trail with the Long Trail.

ADDISON COUNTY — Light streamed in through the paper-thin walls of the temporary shed, a small, greenhouse-like structure plunked down on a Bridport dairy farm. Here, Mark Hoffman is dabbling in alchemy.

Hoffman, a project manager for Montpelier-based Algepower, peered into shallow, plastic troughs stacked one above the other. He was between experiments, and the troughs were mostly empty, but when the system is in full swing the plastic slings are filled with murky green water and hungry algae.

Middlebury mulls idle-free policy

By JOHN FLOWERS

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury selectmen later this month will consider a new “idle-free” policy calling upon motorists to switch off their vehicle engines when they are not traveling.

The new policy is being pitched by the Middlebury Area Global Warming Action Coalition (MAGWAC), an ad hoc citizens group that is working on ways to reduce the community’s carbon footprint. The group reasoned the town could significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions — as well as look after the collective health of its citizens — by adopting an idle-free policy.
