Irene recovery awaits decisions from FEMA

ADDISON COUNTY — Nearly one year after tropical storm Irene hit the state of Vermont local residents are still recovering from the damage. Disaster relief funds and volunteer efforts have dramatically improved conditions, but Irene’s aftermath is still a problem for many Vermonters and those working to help them.

ADDISON COUNTY — As those affected by Tropical Storm Irene continue to rebuild, the deadline to apply for disaster recovery assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Small Business Administration (SBA)is drawing near. FEMA is asking that individuals, town and state government agencies register their claims by next Tuesday, Nov. 15.

ADDISON COUNTY — Social service agencies are alerting area residents that there is still time to apply for federal assistance if they were affected by Tropical Storm Irene. And they say those who are unsure if they qualify for financial assistance should file now and let the agencies decide later if aid is forthcoming.

“It’s possible that insurance will not cover the damage,” said Beth Diamond, regional resource specialist with Vermont 2-1-1, a project of the Vermont United Ways. “Renters should still file.

FEMA aid station makes rounds

MIDDLEBURY — The Federal Emergency Management Agency Mobile Disaster Recovery Center will wrap up a three-day stop in Middlebury at 6 p.m. Thursday. The FEMA team set up shop at VFW Post 7823 off of Exchange Street, helping Addison County residents to register with FEMA and find assistance for damage from the recent flooding.

MIDDLEBURY — People in Addison County and surrounding areas who were affected by the floods from Tropical Storm Irene will find it a little easier to seek disaster assistance this week when federal emergency management officials open a mobile disaster recovery center in Middlebury on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
