Day of fun planned for Shoreham Festival

MIDDLEBURY — The annual Shoreham Festival will be a little leaner this year but still a blast when it is staged in the village all day this Saturday, Sept. 1.

 A recent water main project on the town commons and other factors have forced organizers to pare a few past features of the event, such as the garden tractor pull, tag sale and carnival rides. But this year’s Shoreham Festival will still include such mainstays as a chicken barbecue, parade and street dance.

Shoreham orchard to host benefit concerts to raise funds for farmer flood relief

SHOREHAM — Champlain Orchards in Shoreham is hosting two days of live music this weekend to benefit Vermont farmers affected by Tropical Storm Irene.

Orchard owner Bill Suhr knows there is a need among Vermont’s agricultural community. Champlain Orchards itself lost more than 300 trees, snapped off by the wind and rain during Irene. Suhr estimated the cost of orchard storm damage was $100,000.

Middlebury expects 3,000 for third annual chili festival

MIDDLEBURY — Better Middlebury Partnership (BMP) directors believe they have just the right, spicy recipe to trigger a much-needed spring thaw: the Third Annual Middlebury Winter Carnival and Chili Festival, an event expected to draw upwards of 3,000 people to downtown Middlebury this Saturday.
