MIDDLEBURY — When East Middlebury resident Charlie Hohn — a field naturalist who specializes in water movement — took a walk along the Middlebury River last week, he was troubled by what he saw: two excavators in the river clearing a wide channel.

The heavy equipment was used for infrastructure repairs in response to Tropical Storm Irene, said Middlebury Director of Operations Dan Werner. The work began on Sept. 1 and continued through Sept. 13.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury selectmen heard at their Tuesday meeting that the major Buttolph Drive project — including paving and new sidewalks, water and sewer mains, and storm drains — might not be completed this fall as originally scheduled.

Much of Tuesday’s meeting was devoted to whether flood-prevention work in the Middlebury River in East Middlebury after Tropical Storm Irene was done properly. About four dozen residents and experts questioned selectmen on that issue; see story, Page 1A.

BURLINGTON — Brandon’s historic downtown is more or less intact despite the massive Aug. 28 flood, but there are historic villages across Vermont that have been irreparably damaged, like those in Wilmington and Waterbury.

“Wilmington’s downtown was decimated,” said Paul Bruhn, executive director of the Preservation Trust of Vermont. “There are storefronts, one after another, that just aren’t there anymore.”

ADDISON COUNTY AND BRANDON — Inn and hotel operators in Addison County and Brandon are concerned that Vermont’s recent portrayal as a storm-ravaged state might be discouraging some prospective tourists. But they remain buoyed last week by rebuilding efforts and are confident that bookings will be strong for the critical fall foliage season.

VERMONT — As heavy rains and high winds from Tropical Storm Irene roared through Vermont on Aug. 28, local emergency teams, news outlets and state disaster management officials sought to keep up with incident after incident happening across the state.

But as roads washed out, power went down and travel throughout the state became increasingly difficult, Internet technology and social media stepped into the spotlight.

GRANVILLE / HANCOCK — As inhabitants of the White River Valley tried to pull their lives together after floods from Tropical Storm Irene last week tore up roads, knocked out power and isolated residents, Vermonters who live on the western side of the Green Mountains donated supplies and went in person in large numbers to help out.

Those offering support included local firefighters, college students and human service organizations.

ADDISON COUNTY — As Tropical Storm Irene dropped a deluge of water across Vermont on Aug. 28, the late-season crops on Gildrien Farm’s River Road property in New Haven surrendered to chest-high water from the New Haven River.

Days later, the Vermont Agency of Agriculture issued the death knell for those crops left standing: Due to food safety concerns, no crops touched by floodwaters from the storm may be sold for human consumption.

ADDISON COUNTY — When President Obama approved Gov. Peter Shumlin’s request on Monday to add Addison and Orange counties to Vermont’s federal disaster declaration, it opened the floodgates for federal aid to those who suffered as a result of Tropical Storm Irene.

This declaration — which already applied to five other Vermont counties — will help Vermonters cushion the devastating blow of Tropical Storm Irene, which the White House estimated will cost the Green Mountain State $1.5 billion.
