More than 3,000 dig in at Middlebury's chili festival

MIDDLEBURY — Costello’s Market took top culinary honors at Middlebury’s Third Annual Winter Carnival and Chili Festival, an event that drew more than 3,000 people to Addison County’s shire town, according to organizers.

The festival was held downtown with traffic blocked from Merchants Row and Main Street from the Middlebury Community House to the new rotary.

Middlebury expects 3,000 for third annual chili festival

MIDDLEBURY — Better Middlebury Partnership (BMP) directors believe they have just the right, spicy recipe to trigger a much-needed spring thaw: the Third Annual Middlebury Winter Carnival and Chili Festival, an event expected to draw upwards of 3,000 people to downtown Middlebury this Saturday.

Table Talk: Ferrisburgh wins farm to school video contest

Last year, fifth-grade students at Ferrisburgh Central School made a video showcasing their school's local, healthy food initiatives.

In January, the video won the grand prize in “The Reel Farm to School,” a statewide school video contest sponsored by Vermont Food Education Every Day (VT FEED), the Orton Family Foundation, Vermont Public Television and the Vermont Agency of Agriculture. Hartland Elementary and Randolph Elementary won second and third place in the contest.

Couple buys American Flatbread in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — Vergennes residents Danielle and Stephen Boyce are buying American Flatbread’s Middlebury location, and they have no plans to substantially shake up what has been a winning business recipe at the popular Marble Works-based restaurant.

Danielle Boyce has been manager of American Flatbread’s Middlebury location for the past five years.

Farmers Diner closes, lack of demand cited

MIDDLEBURY — The Farmers Diner ended an almost two-year run in Middlebury on Feb. 14 after the owners determined there was not enough customer traffic to keep the eatery afloat any longer.

“It was totally an economic decision,” said Farmers Diner founder Tod Murphy. “There was just not enough business to keep us open.”

Dakin Farm owner wins maple award

FERRISBURGH — Forget apples — in this case, you could say the sap doesn’t fall far from the maple tree.

Sam Cutting IV, president of Vermont foods retailer Dakin  Farm, recently received the “2010 Maple Person of the Year Award” from the Vermont Maple Industry Council, a group formed to promote and protect the branding of Vermont maple syrup. He’s following in the footsteps of his father, Sam Cutting III, who won the same award 25 years ago.

Shoreham resident Blanca Flores wasn’t prepared for the snow when she moved to Vermont from El Salvador in the winter of 2006.

She also wasn’t prepared for the food.

At the time, her husband, who had already been working in the United States for about nine years, was a farmhand at Kayhart Farms in Waltham. That was where Flores first encountered things like baked beans and peanut butter — foods she’d never come across back home.
