BRANDON — A few keys plays could have made all the difference, but Otter Valley football ended up being outplayed by Burr & Burton on Saturday with the Bull Dogs rolling to a 60-25 victory in Brandon.

The Otters, helmed by talented sophomore OV quarterback John Winslow, repeatedly tried to get successful drives going, but often were unable to convert on fourth down and were forced to punt.

Talented quarterback Jake Stalcup and backs Eric Cerra and Chris Redding carried the Bulldogs.

MIDDLEBURY — Visiting BFA-St. Albans earned a 21-3 victory over the Middlebury Union High School football team on Friday by having two backs rush for more than 100 yards, tackling well and recovering three of the six Tiger fumbles.

The Bobwhites improved to 5-1 in Division I and overall, good for a second-place tie with Essex behind undefeated Hartford, while the Tigers dropped to 3-3 overall, 2-3 in D-I. That league mark leaves them in an eighth-place tie with Burlington with two D-I games to go: at Colchester on Friday and vs. Champlain Valley on Oct. 19 at home.

MIDDLEBURY — A series of miscues and an opportunistic Rutland team made for a frustrating Homecoming setback for the Middlebury Union High School football team, 15-13, on Friday night.

MUHS fumbled a half-dozen times and lost four of them, two setting up two first-half Raider touchdowns and two killing promising second-half drives with the Tigers trying to rally.

BRISTOL — If the Mount Abraham/Vergennes cooperative high school football team wanted to establish itself as a legitimate Division II playoff contender, it had to beat somebody besides opening day victim Montpelier, a program that forfeited its most recent game.

Mission accomplished.

On Saturday, the Eagle offense came alive after a slow start for 267 rushing yards, and senior Cody Alexander’s touchdown with 20 seconds to go and gave Mount Abe a dramatic 27-21 win over visiting Windsor, a D-II finalist in 2011.

BRANDON — The Otter Valley football team’s 20-18 win over U-32 on Saturday was extra sweet as the team’s first Homecoming win in five years.

“I made a point to the kids all week that we wanted to change (five years of Homecoming losses),” Coach Jim Hill said. “And they went out there and found a way to win.”

NFL owners are out of bounds in referee lockout

Y’know, it’s already harder and harder to get excited about each new NFL season as more information steadily comes out about how inherently dangerous the sport, notably at the professional level, is to the human brain.

And now we have the owner-imposed referee lockout to dampen enthusiasm even further.

It’s really difficult to root for a sport that is owned and operated by some of the meanest people who walk the face of the earth.

SPRINGFIELD — The Otter Valley Union High School football team on Aug. 31 rolled to a 35-6 halftime lead on the way to a 48-6 win over host Springfield in both teams’ Division II opener.

A bad snap on a punt gave the Otters two more points, and OV took the kick and marched to score on a 5-yard run by Cody Gutzman.

ADDISON COUNTY — The local high school sports season kicks off — literally — with two football games on Friday night. One of the first two teams in action this fall was the last team in action in the fall of 2011.

That would be the Middlebury Union football team, a perennial title contender that reached the Division I championship game a year ago in its return to D-I after two successful seasons in D-II.
