City man leads Eagles in raising $25 million for diabetes research

Kelly Brush foundation adding momentum

MIDDLEBURY — Kelly Brush, namesake of the Kelly Brush Foundation, could never have imagined where she would be and how many people she would be helping before the accident that left her paralyzed from the waist down eight years ago.

Brush was a talented sophomore on the Middlebury College ski team, a starter in the giant slalom at the Williams College Winter Carnival. On Feb. 18, 2006, the day of Kelly Brush’s race at Williams, conditions were hard and fast.

Family welcomes flood of community support in wake of tragedy

ADDISON COUNTY — When Starksboro’s Jonah Rule, 32, died in a Fayston car crash at the end of June, he left behind his 28-year-old wife Caitlin and two young children, Austin and Callie.

Following the tragic incident, family and friends banded together to help the stay-at-home mother and her kids move forward. The Jonah Rule Memorial Fund was created, an online crowdfunding campaign through Indiegogo.com was initiated and numerous fundraisers sprouted up.

Teen plans soccer tourney to raise AIDS awareness in Africa

MIDDLEBURY — Kelsey Smith has gotten a kick out of soccer ever since she was 5 years old. Now 14 and a standout player, Smith has decided to put her favorite sport to use to help save the lives of young people on the other side of the globe.

Smith is organizing an Aug. 5 soccer tournament in Middlebury that will raise money for AIDS and HIV awareness programs for youths in Africa.

Community rallies after dad dies

ADDISON COUNTY — When Starksboro’s Jonah Rule proposed to his wife Caitlin, it was no surprise to his mother Ann.

Rule’s mother still recalls the first time she saw her daughter-in-law. At that time, Caitlin Rule was a 15-year-old Middlebury Union High School student.

VERGENNES — Back in January, guitar-playing 16-year-old Vergennes resident Matteo Palmer knew several things that turned out to be related.

Those were that he enjoys attending and volunteering for events at the Vergennes Opera House, the theater had in recent years found it more difficult to make ends meet, and Grammy-winning southern Vermont resident Will Ackerman had become one of his guitar idols.

200-year-old Whiting church gets $4K surprise

WHITING — There’s been a lot to celebrate recently at the Whiting Community Church, not the least of which was a series of large, unexpected anonymous donations.

To start with, there was the church’s 200th birthday bash on Oct. 1, which drew more than 200 people despite rainy weather and raised $600.

People turned out to the 40-member church to eat, compete in three-legged races and a cross-cut saw tournament, attend services, bob for apples, watch the fireworks and, said Pastor Billy Jones, have a lot of fun.

Local woman leads effort to buy Waterfront movies

MIDDLEBURY — Addison County resident Jeanne Montross is organizing an effort to acquire the movie inventory from Waterfront Video’s Middlebury store.

Waterfront Video recently announced it was closing its Middlebury store. Managers had announced a movie sale to the general public during the month of May, but Montross — with others — hopes to pull off a bulk purchase of the store’s more than 16,000 titles and eventually make them available for loan to the community.

Northlands students use new skill to help Japan

VERGENNES — A connection made after one of the worst March snowstorms in Vermont history is the key to a Northlands Job Corps student project that is sending aid to Japan after one the worst natural disasters in its history.

A Northlands club that goes by the name Ladies of Success — it is essentially a mutual-support and social-activity group for a small number of female students on the Vergennes campus  — spearheaded a campus-wide student effort to make more than 1,000 paper origami cranes.
