GOSHEN — Sugaring season is off to a great start for Ethan West and his partner Annina Seiler.

Their operation, dubbed Republic of Vermont, doubled its taps to 4,000 this year, and West has just installed a new wood pellet-fired evaporator.

Since installing the new equipment, he’s faced one dilemma he didn’t expect.

“At first I was kind of bored, actually,” West said.

Garden Column by Irven Solomon SealD71-5024C-Edit-2.jpg

A couple of weeks ago, as I was strolling past my veggie garden, a beautiful bunch of berries caught my eye. There it was ?casually poking its head out from among the long grass at the edge of the woods.

I was captivated by the dramatic shape of the cluster, almost six inches long, as well as its ripening berries ?from pure white to ruby red.  A quick look at the leaves suggested I was looking  at some False Solomon’s Seal (Smilacina racemosa).

By Addison Independent

GOSHEN — On Saturday, July 16, the Goshen Gallop will unite runners from across Vermont and around the world, seeking to take the road less traveled, while supporting repairs to trails and bridges damaged by Tropical Storm Irene. To repair this damage, proceeds of this year’s Goshen Gallop will be used to replace two bridges and to fix surrounding trails, allowing visitors to ski over to Romance Mountain.

BRANDON — Voters in eight Brandon-area towns on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved a proposal to merge six school districts into two under the state’s Act 46 school consolidation law. It was the second consolidation in Vermont since the law was approved last spring.

The Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union, along with the Barstow School District, proposed a new side-by-side school district, which the state Board of Education approved earlier this month.

Hidden gardens of Middlebury-1236 color.jpg

The success of any garden is measured by the pleasure it brings to the people who use it. And, when many people use a garden, there is much pleasure to go around.

Hidden behind the walls of the Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury is a garden that is enjoyed by hundreds of people in sundry ways. It is a garden that serves the entire Helen Porter community — not only the residents and their visitors, but also the many staff and volunteers associated with the nursing home.
