MIDDLEBURY — When we talk about cancer, we often speak of the genetic and environmental causes.

But according to Nicole Rohrig, nutritionist at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury, lifestyle has a role to play, too.

While cancer treatment plans vary widely depending on the type and stage of the disease, Rohrig said there are certain habits that can help reduce cancer risks.

MIDDLEBURY –– Planned Parenthood is a national reproductive health care provider, which is divided into regional affiliates. The Middlebury Health Center is one of 10 sites that comprise Planned Parenthood of Northern New England (PPNNE).

Planned Parenthood provides a variety of reproductive health services to men and women, explained Jill Krowinski, director of Vermont public affairs for PPNNE.

Celebrated film on autism to be shown at Ilsley

MIDDLEBURY — A little piece of Hollywood is coming to Ilsley Public Library in Middlebury.

On July 26 at 6 p.m., Academy Award-nominated film producer Douglas Biklen will be appearing alongside the documentary film “Wretches and Jabberers.” The film follows two Vermonters living with autism as they travel to advocate for disability rights. This film is among others, including the Academy Award-nominated “Autism is a World,” that Biklen has produced on the topic of autism awareness.

New dental center eyed for Bristol's downtown

Now, with Bristol health facilities shifting spaces and one clinic applying for special federal status, chair of the center’s board, Peg Martin, thinks the nonprofit’s stars might finally align in Bristol.

New health center aims to broaden care

BRISTOL — Since 2005, the Bristol-based health care advocacy group Five Town Health Alliance, or 5THA, has sought to provide broader and cheaper primary care to Addison County residents.

Beginning next week, the organization will take its biggest stride yet in accomplishing this goal, as it teams up with Mountain Health Center to create a new non-profit health center in Bristol.

Low-cal sweetener poses hazard to dogs

MIDDLEBURY — When Karen Lykins of Middlebury woke up last Saturday morning, it was to find Lily, her three-month-old Sheltie puppy, surrounded by bodily fluids on the floor. She brought the dog to the veterinarian right away, but just a few hours later, Lily had died of liver failure.
