Vermont author shares South Korea memoir July 6

MIDDLEBURY — As the youngest child of socially progressive Presbyterian missionaries, Elizabeth Rice spent most of the first 16 years of her life in Seoul, South Korea. At the time, Korea was at a pivotal juncture, emerging from brutal war that had divided the nation. Ilsley Library will host Rice on Thursday, July 6, from 4-5 p.m., when she will read from her first book, “Rituals of Separation: a South Korean Memoir of Identity and Belonging.”

Ilsley to test waters for fundraising

MIDDLEBURY — At last Tuesday’s meeting, members of the Middlebury selectboard unanimously approved the Ilsley Library Board’s request to search for a fundraising consultant to help determine the potential success of community fund drive for a proposed expansion/renovation of the library building on Main Street.

Labor historian to give June 7 talk on 'What if poor women ran the world?'

MIDDLEURY — Labor historian Annelise Orleck will recount the struggle for welfare rights by Las Vegas women in the 1970s in a talk at Ilsley Public Library in Middlebury onJune 7 at 7 p.m. Her talk,What if Poor Women Ran the World?is part of the Vermont Humanities Council’sFirst Wednesdays lecture seriesand is free and open to the public. (Note: This talk is rescheduled from January.)

Cuba presentation May 16 at Ilsley

MIDDLEBURY — In “Cuba Today,” Tami Munford, Middlebury educator and author, will share photos and experiences of modern Cuban culture from her multiple trips to Cuba. The presentation will take place at the Ilsley Public Library community meeting room from 7-8 p.m., on May 16.

Munford has had years of experience with Latin-American culture, beginning when she learned Spanish in Caracas, Venezuela, where she lived from 1984 to 1989.

Middlebury youngsters earn 1st place in Vt. PBS writing contest

MIDDLEBURY — Six-year-old Reed Allen and seven-year-old Campbell Gong, both of Middlebury, have won first place for stories they entered in the 2017 Vermont PBS Kids’ Writers Contest. The annual contest, sponsored by Vermont PBS, accepts entries from children in kindergarten through grade 5.

Entrants from across Vermont must submit an original short story, accompanied by at least five illustrations. The entries are judged by a panel of writers, youth advocates, and librarians, who bestow a first and second place award for each grade level.

Learn about 'green burial' on February 20 at Ilsley

MIDDLEBURY — A new organization forming in the state, Green Burial Vermont, will host an informational meeting on Monday, Feb. 20, from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the Ilsley Public Library in Middlebury. The short documentary video, “Dying Green,” will be shown, followed by a brief talk by Michelle Acciavatti, coauthor with the Calais Cemetery Commission of House Bill 3, currently under consideration in the Vermont Legislature.

Labor historian to talk about grassroots struggle against poverty

MIDDLEBURY — Labor historian Annelise Orleck will recount the struggle for welfare rights by Las Vegas women in the 1970s in a talk at Ilsley Public Library in Middlebury on Wednesday, Jan. 4, at 7 p.m. Her talk, “What if Poor Women Ran the World?” is part of the Vermont Humanities Council’s First Wednesdays lecture series and is free and open to the public.

Orleck will tell the story of nine African American union maids in Las Vegas who challenged welfare cuts and built a long-lasting, vibrant anti-poverty program run by poor mothers.

Ilsley hosts Iron Chef contest for area students

MIDDLEBURY ¾ The basement of the Ilsley Public Library was filled on Friday night with the enthusiasm of middle school and high school students and a colorful spread of foods ranging from chocolate to fruit pizza as about 20 teens were competing to win the title of “Iron Chef.”

The two-hour event was hosted by the Teen Advisory Group and funded by the library to promote teen after-hours special events.
