Invasive species can be bad, but not all bad

invasive species The Outside Story zebra mussel.jpg

Invasive species have earned their bad reputations. English sparrows compete with native birds from Newfoundland to South America. Australian brown tree snakes are well on their way to exterminating every last bird from the forests of Guam. And I don’t think anyone can fully predict how Colombia’s rivers will change in response to drug lord Pablo Escobar’s escaped hippopotamus population.

ORWELL — Drive the back roads of Addison County right now, and you’ll see acres and acres of plowed corn fields, giant clods of Addison County clay upturned, waiting for the cold and snow to break them into something more manageable, so that springtime harrowing can convert them into something like a seed bed fit for next year’s corn.

Down the drain: Street stencil reminds us that waste goes to lake

BRISTOL — As merrymakers began arriving for the Bristol Harvest Festival on Saturday, Sept. 26, a group of 14 volunteers with the New Haven River Anglers Association fanned out along Bristol streets on a serious mission.

In groups of twos and threes they stopped at storm drains in the village center, laid down a stencil, and painted a message for anyone who deposits waste — fluids and solids — into the gutters:

“Keep It Clean, Drains To River.”

VERGENNES — Vergennes residents this weekend can have a say on the future of their hometown, especially its downtown and Otter Creek basin — and a chance to see what Main Street bike lanes and sidewalk bulb-outs might look like.

As part of a larger, grant-supported effort to develop what officials call a “Vergennes Downtown-Basin Master Plan,” residents are invited to a pair of walks on Friday evening from the city green down to Otter Creek, and then on Saturday to demonstrations of how Main Street could be friendlier for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Editorial: Act 64 is a sea change in policy

By Angelo S. Lynn

University of Vermont agronomy specialist Jeff Carter, who works out of the Middlebury office, recently gave adequate warning to Addison County farmers that change was coming in light of a recent agreement between the state agriculture department and the Conservation Law Foundation. In that settlement the state agreed to mandate farms whose land drain into Lake Champlain implement best management practices on their land. It’s a substantial change from previous measures and it comes with significant consequences for those who don’t comply.

VERGENNES — With a meeting looming of cities and towns dealing with overflowing municipal sewer systems, last week Vergennes officials once again discussed their city system’s persistent habit of dumping wastewater into Otter Creek — and the expensive state order to fix the problem that is almost certainly on the way.

ST. ALBANS — More than 200 people packed the Bliss Auditorium in St. Albans last Wednesday night, many of them holding signs expressing their anger over the growing blue-green algae problem in Lake Champlain, to listen to a presentation on the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) plan to clean it up.

One of the attendees brought a startling visual: A bright green jar of blue-green algae, which sat at the head table of speakers during the meeting called to lay out the EPA’s Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) target to the public.

ST. ALBANS — Vermont will invest millions of state and local funds in Lake Champlain cleanup efforts over the next few years as part of Vermont’s Clean Water Act passed by the Legislature this session and signed into law by Gov. Peter Shumlin in June.

To restore the quality of Lake Champlain’s waters, Vermont will have to reduce phosphorous loading in the lake by 33.8 percent.
