Salisbury to unveil new soldiers memorial at veterans’ park

SALISBURY — Salisbury residents will have an extra reason to honor their local veterans this Memorial Day thanks to a successful effort by the local historical society to install a monument on town-owned land off of Maple Street.

The society, led by Barry Whitney Jr., spent the last seven years raising money to create the first designated veterans’ park for honoring all local servicemen and women who’ve served during every major conflict dating back to the Revolutionary War.

ADDISON COUNTY — The last weekend in May is always a big one for anyone who likes to listen to brass bands play, wonder at the precision driving of Shriners in pint-size vehicles, and watch a procession of friends and neighbors march past holding banners and waving. This year should be no exception.

Six Addison County towns will host Memorial Day parades this weekend.

Towns ready to remember fallen heroes

ADDISON COUNTY — People looking to honor those who have served our country — and listen to marching bands, watch their neighbors’ kids walk together in uniforms, and look at creative floats — this Sunday and Monday will have a half-dozen options around the county.

Memorial Day parades and ceremonies are planned, in chronological order, in Orwell, Middlebury, Brandon, Hancock, Vergennes and Bristol.

Orwell kicks off two days of activities with its 39th annual Sunday afternoon parade, which will begin at 1:30 p.m. and last about 45 minutes.

BANDS, REENACTORS, LITTLE Leaguers, firetrucks (both big and small), horses, tractors, candy and even a couple of aliens appeared on the streets of Middlebury and Vergennes Monday for Memorial Day parades. Large crowds soaked up the sun and excitement, and then both towns offered heartfelt words of honor and remembrance at ceremonies following the parades.

ADDISON COUNTY — On this Memorial Day Weekend, locals will get plenty of chances to remember the sacrifices of the women and men who died in service to our country and to feel the first thrills of summer in parades around the county.

Look for parades in Orwell, Middlebury, Vergennes and Bristol this weekend. There will also be readings of patriotic and nostalgic verse and plenty of men and women in uniform to go up and thank.

WWII vet Richard Poquette to lead Memorial Day parade

VERGENNES — The annual Memorial Day parade in Vergennes is a tradition that honors the men and women of the armed forces who died overseas in service of America.

This year the parade marshal will be longtime resident and World War II veteran Richard Poquette.

Like many of his generation, the Vermont native was swept up by the monumental events that rocked the globe. He answered the call and served his country in some of the biggest battles in both the European and Pacific theaters of World War II.
