Film festival series to be screened at Town Hall Theater

Successful Middlebury film festival excites viewers, filmmakers

MIDDLEBURY — With the awarding of 13 fuzzy, well-groomed teddy bears, the third annual Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival closed its curtains on Aug. 27, concluding what festival organizers said was the best year ever.

MNFF Artistic Director Jay Craven reported that this year’s festival featured the largest number of films screened (96), the most filmmakers to attend (over 40), and a record number of special guests. That the festival also attracted bigger audiences with high engagement also gave this year’s festival high marks.

Globe reporter tells how his Boston crime boss story made it to film

MIDDLEBURY — The third annual Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival continued its tradition of inviting special guests to talk about their experiences and accomplishments in filmmaking and beyond.

One of the guests this year, Dick Lehr, is a prominent author, journalist and screenwriter based in Boston. Lehr is co-author of “Black Mass: Whitey Bulger, the FBI, and a Devil’s Deal,” which became the basis for the 2015 film “Black Mass,” which starred Johnny Depp as the notorious crime boss James “Whitey” Bulger.

Middlebury festival gives diverse filmmakers chances to reach new people

Documentary filmmaker Thomas Bena had just finished writing an email to Dick Lehr, the former Boston Globe investigative reporter, when I recognized him in Carol’s Hungry Mind Café on Saturday afternoon. I remembered him from that day’s earlier screening of “Nashville.” I quickly did some research on my phone and, as a rookie reporter and aspiring filmmaker, and engaged him in a conversation.

Middlebury in the spotlight as film festival hits screens today

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury takes the regional movie spotlight this week with its hosting of the 3rd Annual Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival (MNFF), which runs Thursday, Aug. 24, to Sunday, Aug. 27.

Hundreds of young directors and cinema enthusiasts have booked rooms and made restaurant reservations, and will be shopping at area stores while they partake in a menu of more than 90 features, shorts and documentaries that will be shown during the festival and will be considered for “VTeddy” awards.

Discover something new at the film festival

Festivals provide us with the equivalent of extra holidays.  They allow us to suspend business as usual and take time off from work or our daily routine to discover the unexpected. We get to see friends in a new setting or catch up with people we haven’t seen for a while. Maybe we punctuate our comings and goings with a shared meal or hot fudge sundae.

He will appear at this year’s Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival to talk about his work, which has led to the production of two films (“Black Mass” and “The Birth of a Movement”) along with two more (“The Fence” and “Judgment Ridge”) that are now in development.

Character actors' contributions to be highlighted at festival

Great character-actors often go underappreciated and they’re usually underrated for the impact they have in our star-driven film industry. I’m sure this can be discouraging for the actor — they can deliver a richly nuanced performance only to have it upstaged by the muscular plot or movie stars that Hollywood uses to sell tickets. But that comes with the territory.

Now in its third year, the Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival has served as a venue for first and second time filmmakers from all over the world.

At this year’s showcase, 16 of the more than 90 feature and short films slated to be screened were submitted by international filmmakers, who come from places like France, India, Lebanon and the United Kingdom.

Line-up announced for 3rd annual film festival

MIDDLEBURY — There’s a great line-up of films at this year’s Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival (Aug. 24-27) produced by Vermont residents, members of Middlebury College and international filmmakers.

“We’re seeing an increasing number of strong films by emerging Vermont filmmakers,” said MNFF artistic director Jay Craven; “including fascinating and deeply committed films by high-school filmmakers through the Freedom and Unity and Conversations from the Open Roads projects.”
