Middlebury's 35th annual Turkey Trot draws 247 runners

MIDDLEBURY — Two hundred and forty-seven runners braved cold temperatures on Nov. 24 to run either five or 10 kilometers in the Middlebury Parks and Recreation Department’s annual Turkey Trot and Gobble Wobble.

Many runners brought donations to local food shelves, 20 won drawings for turkeys after the race, and many more won prizes donated by the many local business sponsors of the annual event in a post-race raffle.

Middlebury Police Log: Police help woman at warming shelter

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police responded to a report about a woman banging on the doors of the new warming shelter on South Pleasant Street on Dec. 15. Shelter personnel were not able to let the woman in due to rules barring admittance after 10 p.m. Police took the woman to the Grace House in Rutland.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Assisted Middlebury firefighters at the scene of a blaze at Champlain Valley Equipment on Exchange Street on Dec. 9.

Damaged ceiling closes St. Stephen's worship hall, church eyes repairs as Christmas nears

MIDDLEBURY — St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church officials are sizing up damage to the ceiling within the main worship hall of the historic building on Middlebury’s town green, in hopes of soon resuming regular services in that space.

Middlebury College, town wrangle over terms for park

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday failed to muster enough votes to pass a revised term sheet outlining the mechanics of an agreement with Middlebury College on construction of a new town office building and recreation center, with some members voicing concern at the institution’s rejection of a request that the current municipal building/gym site be perpetually maintained as a public park.

Committee to help Ilsley Library with expansion plans

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday declined a request from Ilsley Public Library directors that the design of the proposed new town office building be revised to reflect 3,000 to 4,000 square feet of additional space for a children’s library.

But selectboard members agreed to study, and take on as a priority, the library’s space needs and didn’t close the door on the possibility that at least some of those needs could be addressed within the new town office project.

Champlain Valley Equipment keeps plowing new ground

MIDDLEBURY — Champlain Valley Equipment’s (CVE) headquarters at 453 Exchange St. in Middlebury is a honeycomb of activity, with workers buzzing around to fill the business orders that keep coming in.

Well, the beehive is about to get a little bigger, as a result of two new additions designed to help the company better manage its growth and showcase its wares.

Opinion: Why I'm not running for re-election

I will not be running for re-election in November of 2014. 

I am happy and humbled to have had the opportunity to serve in the Vermont Legislature as one of Middlebury’s representatives in the General Assembly. I have long been interested in and active in politics, and my election in 2010 was a big step for my activism — and a big commitment. Now, my growing responsibilities to my customers and employees require that I return my focus to their interests.

Middlebury Police Log: Man cited for aggravated domestic assault

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police arrested Robert H. Meacham III, 33, of Cornwall and charged him with first-degree aggravated domestic assault and unlawful restraint, following an investigation in the Route 7 South area on Dec. 5. Police said a woman alleged that Meacham had assaulted her the previous day in Cornwall.

Meacham was lodged that evening at the Marble Valley Correctional Center, according to police.

UD-3 school board split on cuts for MUMS

MIDDLEBURY —  UD-3 school directors will meet on Dec. 18 in hopes of finalizing a 2014-2015 budget for Middlebury Union middle and high schools that currently reflects a 2.8-percent spending increase as well as 3.2 fewer educator positions at MUMS.

Tenny won't file citizens' position

MIDDLEBURY — Former Middlebury selectboard Chairman John Tenny has elected not to pursue a citizens’ petition to force a Town Meeting Day vote on a new municipal building and recreation center. He cited legal advice indicating such an effort might confuse issues for local voters when they turn out at the polls next March 4.
