Local softball teams run into a rough patch

ADDISON COUNTY — Things did not go well for area teams in recent high school softball action, as Mount Abraham and Otter Valley each lost a pair of games while Middlebury and Vergennes dropped a game apiece.

MUHS students join model UN debates

MIDDLEBURY — Last weekend, 10 students from Middlebury Union High School joined over 500 teenagers from 35 different schools in a three-day Model United Nations conference run by Dartmouth College. In Model United Nations, students act as diplomats and negotiators from different countries, coming together in a simulated effort to solve world problems. MUHS students participated in a variety of committees, and took home two awards.

Tiger and Otter softball are victorious, others fall

ADDISON COUNTY / BRANDON — Otter Valley and Middlebury Union both claimed victories in high school softball action late last week, while Vergennes and Mount Abraham both suffered setbacks.

OV BLASTS RUTLAND

Junior Taylor Aines had an excellent outing on the mound for OV on Friday, allowing only two hits in a 10-0 shutout vs. Rutland in Brandon. She struck out eight and walked none.

Rutland did not get to first base until the fourth inning, when Rutland’s Karli McGinnins and Bree Crossman both singled.

Tiger baseball tops Slaters, but then drop next two games

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School baseball team gave new coach Charlie Messenger a win in his first game this past Wednesday, 10-5 over visiting Fair Haven, but came up short in its next two games.

On Thursday, visiting South Burlington struck early in an 11-1 win, and on Saturday, host St. Johnsbury snapped a 2-2 tie with a pair of unearned runs in the fifth inning to win, 4-2.

MUHS boys lacrosse rally past Redhawks

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ lacrosse team on Tuesday earned one of the program’s biggest wins in recent years, knocking off perennial Division I contender Champlain Valley, 10-7.

The Tigers spotted the Redhawks four quick goals, and still trailed at the end of the first quarter, 6-3. But they rallied to tie the game at the half, 7-7; held CVU scoreless in the second half; and scored three times in the fourth period to nail down the victory.

Tiger girls' lacrosse starts season with a win

MIDDLEBURY — In a rematch of the 2012 Division I semifinal, the host Middlebury Union High School girls’ lacrosse team opened this past Wednesday with a convincing, 12-7 win over Rutland.

 

Next up for the Tigers, whose Friday home game with Woodstock was postponed, is another rematch: Defending D-I champion South Burlington, the team that knocked off MUHS in the 2012 final. The Tigers will visit the Rebels on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Eagle junior tops Independent's girls' basketball all-star team

ADDISON COUNTY — It was a dream season for longtime Coach Connie LaRose’s Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ basketball team, which won the Division II title with a 23-1 record thanks to skill, teamwork, chemistry, hard work and relentless defense.

Connor set to compete at national speach contest

MONTPELIER — Erin Connor of Bridport will again represent Vermont at the national contest of the High School Oratorical Scholarship Program, the premier scholarship program of the American Legion. As a sophomore, Connor made her first trip to the national contest in 2011 and progressed to the second round of the three-round contest. Her parents are Paul and Marian Connor of Bridport.

OV senior tops Addy Indy boys' basketball all-star team

ADDISON COUNTY — The undefeated Division II champion Vergennes Union High School boys’ basketball team made and deserved the lion’s share of headlines this winter. Meanwhile, one player put together an outstanding individual season with less fanfare: Otter Valley senior forward Ryan Kelley, who headlines the 2013 Addison Independent Boys’ Basketball All-Star Team as the Player of the Year.

Familiar faces among new MUHS coaches

MIDDLEBURY — At Monday night’s spring sports meeting at Middlebury Union High School, activities director Sean Farrell told the gathered athletes and parents he had never had a busier time preparing for a season.

Four MUHS varsity spring coaches stepped down since the spring of 2012, and Farrell also had to find three new JV coaches.

Deciding to leave, in order of seniority, were:

•  Baseball coach Doc Seubert, who last fall decided that almost four decades was enough of heading the MUHS boys’ soccer and baseball programs.
