Brandon hosts silent comedies with live music

Laughter for the whole family is on tap at Brandon Town Hall, where classic silent comedies starring Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy will be screened with live music on Saturday, Aug. 11. The show starts at 7 p.m.; admission is free, donations are encouraged.

The program, the latest in the Brandon Town Hall's summer silent film series, will feature short comedies made by the iconic comedy team prior to the advent of talkies. Music will be provided by Jeff Rapsis, a New Hampshire-based composer who specializes in improvising live accompaniment for silent films.

School to perform German opera at THT

MIDDLEBURY — The German Summer Language School’s “German for Singers” program will once again present their summer opera project to the general public. On Friday, Aug. 10, and again on Saturday, Aug. 11, at 8:30 p.m., participants in the program will perform an abbreviated version of Mozart’s “Die Gärtnerin aus Liebe,” KV 196 (his German version of La Finta Giardiniera) at Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater.

Hear songs penned by 19th century Vermont women

ADDISON — “Vermont’s Musical Ladies,” a free lecture and musical performance, will be staged at the John Strong DAR Mansion Museum in Addison on Saturday, Aug. 18, at 1 p.m. In it, singer and researcher Linda Radtke, joined by pianist Arthur Zorn, will explore the contributions of Vermont women to the traditions of parlor songs, women’s club music contests, and social reform efforts.

Julia Mark brings her folk-pop-jazz music to Brandon

Julia Mark is a singer, pianist and songwriter performing jazz-inflected folk/pop — we’ve heard that before. What makes Mark unique are the subjects of her songs. She writes lyric-driven, optimistically dissonant songs about life on the moon, loss of memory, shifting homes and palindromes.

Mark returns to the Brandon Music stage with upright bass player Forrest Pettengill this Saturday, Aug. 4, 7:30 p.m., before she embarks on an East Coast to Midwest tour.

Point CounterPoint features faculty in concert

The Point CounterPoint faculty musicians will present an evening of chamber music at Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater on Wednesday, Aug. 1, at 7:30 p.m. Middlebury pianist Diana Fanning is the special guest artist in a performance of Robert Schumann’s Piano Quartet. The program also includes Mozart’s Viola Quintet in G Minor, and Janacek’s String Quartet No. 2, “Intimate Letters.”

On Friday, July 27, the DuPont Brothers will take the corner stage on the vineyard’s patio from 6 p.m. until dusk. Britt Connors and Bourbon Renewal bring their own brand of “Y’all-ternative” music back to Brandon Music this Saturday evening, armed with the makings of Connor’s third album. Before heading into the studio in September, they’ll debut some new songs and new arrangements of old songs. The band is comprised of some of Boston’s finest jazz and Americana musicians, who have all previously played at Brandon Music with Connor, or as part of the John Funkhouser Trio/Quartet.

Maritime Festival sails into Burlington

Next week, the Lake Champlain Maritime Festival (presented by Citizens Bank this year) will take over Burlington’s Waterfront Park from July 26-29. This festival is a four-day celebration of Lake Champlain with exhibits and events all around the Queen City’s scenic park.

Folk musician Melissa Plett bares her soul

This Saturday evening, Notte (downstairs Two Brothers in Middlebury) welcomes Melissa Plett and her folk music. Originally from a farm-yard in Manitoba, this truck-driver's daughter has journeyed her way through thick and thin, chiseling and shaping her sound to what it is today. Plett’s influences come from the down-south storytelling of Johnny Cash, the tell-all nature of Kitty Wells, and the heart-wrenching tales of hardship from Etta James and Ray Charles.

Quintet busts out the blues in South Burlington
