Northlands change delayed again

VERGENNES — A series of delayed decisions has led to status quo at Northlands Job Corps: Alutiiq LLC, the center operator that the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), the national job training program’s overseer, said would leave this past December will now remain there until at least September.

Northlands is also doing business as usual even though the DOL’s lease for the MacDonough Drive campus in Vergennes, an agreement that dates back to 1978, technically expired on June 1.

VERGENNES — U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) and Vergennes officials confirmed last week that the current firm now operating Northlands Job Corps, Alutiiq LLC, has been granted an additional three months to run the federally funded job-training center for disadvantaged youth.

The DOL, which oversees the nation’s roughly 120 Job Corps centers, had announced in March that it would terminate Alutiiq’s Northlands contract, effective Dec. 31.

However, Ted Fitzgerald, the DOL’s Regional Director for Public Affairs for the area that includes New England and New York, said this week that Alutiiq’s contract will be extended through the end of 2012 to give the DOL time to find a new firm to run the MacDonough Drive center.

VERGENNES — The newest addition to the Vergennes landscape towers over the Northlands Job Corps campus and is capable of powering 20 homes.

On Dec. 30, Vermont contractors Engineers Construction and Encore Redevelopment finished installing a 121-foot-tall wind turbine on a knoll on the north end of the Northlands Job Corps campus.

The windmill, built in Barre by Northern Power Systems, will be owned and operated by Green Mountain Power, but the Vergennes job-training center will receive 10 percent of its power output.

VERGENNES — A connection made after one of the worst March snowstorms in Vermont history is the key to a Northlands Job Corps student project that is sending aid to Japan after one the worst natural disasters in its history.
