Clippings: Vermont's size is a big strength

Posted on June 6, 2013 |
By Xian Chiang-Waren

Everything in the West is bigger. That was the thought going through my head as our car sped east on Route 2 through North Dakota just after sunset late last August, watching the fluorescent lights of Williston, N.D., flicker away behind us.

They weren’t the only lights. As far as the eye could see, hundreds of fires blazed from holes blasted into the prairie. The scale of industry and vastness of the Great Plains were overwhelming. We drove east pushing 75 mph for almost two hours. For almost two hours, on either side of the road, the fields were burning.

The Outside Story: For the pussy willow, spring is it’s time to shine

Posted on May 13, 2013 |
By Virginia Barlow

Last fall, I went to a nearby wetland with a pair of clippers and cut twigs from one willow shrub after another. It wasn’t hard to tell the willows from the non-willows because willows are the only woody plants in this area whose buds are covered by a single bud scale. These cute, pointy caps are very different from the overlapping scales that protect most buds through the winter. And the few woody plants with no protective scales are easily recognizable: their naked, embryonic leaves rely on a coating of woolliness to keep them from desiccating or freezing.

Jessie Raymond: Redialing opinion on smartphone

Posted on May 9, 2013 |
By Jessie Raymond

As a person who considers herself (a) frugal and (b) skeptical of new technology, I have a confession to make.

I want a smartphone. Desperately.

This admission gets two reactions. The first, from people who sometimes don’t even look up from their own phones as they respond, is, “Well, duh.” The other, the one that echoed my own sentiments until a few weeks ago, is, “Ugh, no. Why would anyone spend that kind of money every month on a stupid phone whose use is causing the rapid meltdown of society as we know it?”

Opinion: Pick up after your pets

Posted on May 6, 2013 |
By Lisa Liotta

This week’s writer is Lisa Liotta, park ranger at Niquette Bay State Park in Colchester.

The Scoop on Poop

As a seasonal park ranger at the only Vermont State Park that allows dogs off-leash in a designated area, I pick up a tremendous amount of doggie doo. Recently, I began thinking seriously about the impact of pet waste on our environment, and started doing some research.

Clippings: When in a jam, 'Toasty' delivers

Posted on April 25, 2013 |
By Trent Campbell

My toaster and I haven’t been getting along lately. I don’t know what’s wrong. Toasty just hasn’t been himself. Now, to be clear, I don’t actually call my toaster Toasty in real life. I’m not crazy. It just seems like for the purposes of this column it will be easier if I can refer to my toaster by name. I thought about Bob or James or William Arthur Philip Louis Windsor II, but I am sticking with Toasty.

Jessie Raymond: The waiting game can take its toll

Posted on April 25, 2013 |
By Jessie Raymond

The other afternoon I found myself standing next to a lovely young woman. She wore a flowing ankle-length skirt and an expression of pure contentment. Her languid movements and placid countenance reflected the soul of a person who has transcended the pressures of daily life and found a space where time has no meaning.

I wanted to kick her in the shins.

Ways of Seeing: A tragedy might possibly end with love

Posted on April 25, 2013 |
By Rebecca Gould

Now it’s time for the healing to begin. Our community needs closure. Let’s make things get back to normal. Today, we will start moving on.

After every tragedy in a community — especially those that gain media attention — we hear these stock phrases. They are well-meaning and they speak to our natural — sometimes desperate — hunger for order in the midst of chaos. But, to me, they feel so wrong.

Politically Thinking: Vt. Gas decisions made elsewhere

Posted on April 18, 2013 |
By Eric Davis

Letters to the editor, columns, and editorials in recent issues of the Independent have criticized Vermont Gas Systems for trying to obtain approval of the Addison Natural Gas project without allowing sufficient time for public consultation and revising the proposal in response to public concerns. One reason for this criticism may be that although Vermont Gas Systems has the word “Vermont” in its name, the gas company is really a subsidiary of a large Canadian energy complex that is owned by an interlocking network of pension funds and gas producers all across Canada.
