Orwell teacher bids farewell after 36 years

ORWELL — In the 36 years since Sally (Gilmore) DeLancey, 57, first set foot in the Orwell Village School to start work as a kindergarten teacher, a lot has changed.

DeLancey, who is retiring from her position this month, said she has seen curriculum pushed ahead by leaps and bounds, and children have been required to know more and more in their early years.

Addison-Rutland pact confirmed

ORWELL — Teachers and boards in the Addison Rutland Supervisory Union have ratified a three-year contract after months of deliberation and a narrowly averted teacher strike.

The new contract was completed with the help of a federal mediator just hours before the teacher strike was set to begin on March 21. The agreement applies to teachers across the supervisory union for the current school year and runs through summer 2014.

Teachers call off strike in Orwell district

ORWELL — Early Wednesday morning, school boards in the Addison Rutland Supervisory Union (ARSU) and representatives of the district’s teachers’ union reached a tentative contract agreement, averting a threatened teachers’ strike that day.

Orwell Village School board chair Glen Cousineau, who said both sides agreed to keep details of the agreement private until it is ratified, was relieved by the breakthrough.

Orwell teachers prepared to strike this week

ORWELL — Contract negotiations in the Addison-Rutland Supervisory Union are coming down to the wire, as teachers in that district announced on Friday that they would strike if school boards do not return to the table and reach a settlement by Wednesday.

Teachers in ARSU, which includes Orwell, Benson, Castleton and Fair Haven, have been working without a contract since July 2011 and are in the 15th month of negotiations on a new contract, having so far failed to reach a compromise. The supervisory union has imposed a pay freeze.
