ADDISON COUNTY — Summiting mountains is always easier with friends.

That’s the philosophy behind the Young Adventurers Club, an offshoot of the Addison County-focused Breadloaf Section of the Green Mountain Club.

Lauren Bierman took over as director of the Young Adventurers Club, or YAC, in 2016 with the intent of getting her young sons, seven-year-old Ty and five-year-old Sam, exploring Vermont’s mountains, woods, lakes and streams. She also hoped to burn some of their endless energy in the process.

Design your own garden

garden S6-5192-Pano.jpg

August is a quiet month in the life of a gardener — a wonderful time to relax and enjoy our creations.  Spring weeding and planting activities are far behind us and fall clean-up chores are still weeks away.

And, since you can readily see what aspects of the garden you like or don’t like, August is also the perfect time to mull on changes you might want to make sometime in the future and even experiment with your design ideas on paper.

Swim areas being tested for E. coli bacteria

MIDDLEBURY — As residents seek respite from scorching summer temperatures at local swimming holes, pesky rumors about water cleanliness — or lack thereof — can inject unease into otherwise bliss-filled afternoons. Talk of waterborne E. coli is particularly quick to cause alarm.

Thanks to the Addison County River Watch Collaborative, though, swimmers wary of foul waters can find monthly updates on E. coli levels in local waters that can help determine which swimming holes are safest.

5-Town Master Naturalists Picnic Photo.jpg

BRISTOL — The ecological brain trust in Bristol, Lincoln, Monkton, New Haven and Starksboro is about to get a little bigger and a little more knowledgeable.

The Vermont Master Naturalist (VMN) program, which has for two years offered in-depth training in local natural history to Burlington residents with a sustained interest and background in at least one natural history discipline, is expanding its offerings to the 5-Towns, as well as to Richmond, South Hero and Williston.

The Outside Story: Orb webs and the artwork of spiders

Posted on July 9, 2018 |
By Rachel Marie Sargent

TOS_Spider_Web.jpg

When I was little and tagging along when my dad tended his vegetables, I would sometimes find large black and yellow garden spiders. They were beautiful, and I noticed they had a curious trait: they often added a bright white decorative zigzag to their webs. I always wondered why, if a spider web is meant to catch insects unawares, these spiders would go to such effort to make their webs more visible?

To answer this question, I recently spoke with Dr. Todd Blackledge, who researches spider silk and the web decorations of garden spiders.

Take a dip at Bartlett's, but don't block the flow

Posted on July 5, 2018 |
By Addison Independent

LINCOLN — Those Bristol-Lincoln area residents, and visitors, seeking relief from the recent heat wave should be aware that Vermont State Police on Sunday ordered the towing of a number of cars parked on the Lincoln Road near Bartlett Falls on the New Haven River.

According to a VSP press release, the cars “posed a significant hazard since they blocked the flow of traffic.”

VSP stated the cars towed were those that remained after they had issued warnings to citizens at the popular swimming spot. The cars were towed at about 2 p.m.
