Middlebury College skier gets slot on Canadian team

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College senior alpine skier and Toronto, Canada, native David Donaldson has earned himself a starting spot on the Canadian team in every FIS World Cup giant slalom race next winter.  

Donaldson recently capped off the most impressive winter of competition for any Eastern collegiate skier by placing second in the Audi Coupe Nor-Am Cup giant slalom standings.

Panther men's hoop heads to the 'Elite Eight'

SALEM, Va. — The Middlebury College men’s basketball team has earned a spot in the NCAA Division III tournament’s elite eight for the second time in the last three seasons. The Panthers (25-3) will travel to Salem, Va., to take on 27-3 North Central (Ill.) in an NCAA quarterfinal game on Friday at 8 p.m.

On Saturday at 8:30 p.m., the winner of the Middlebury-North Central game is set to meet the winner of another Friday quarterfinal at the Salem Civic Center, between Amherst (27-2) and Cabrini (25-5).

Panther men's hoop headed to Elite Eight

MIDDLEBURY — Junior guard Joey Kizel made two free throws with 1.8 seconds remaining in Saturday’s game against Ithaca to send the host Middlebury College men’s basketball team into the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division III tournament, 73-72.

Four Panthers skiers are All-Americans

MIDDLEBURY — Four Middlebury College skiers earned All-American honors — one did so twice — when the Panther ski team hosted the 2013 NCAA Championships at the Snow Bowl in Hancock and Rikert Nordic Center in Ripton from Wednesday through Saturday last week. See a slideshow here.

Colorado rallies to win NCAA ski crown

RIPTON — The University of Colorado posted the biggest final-day comeback in the history of the NCAA skiing championships on Saturday to earn its 18th national title at the Rikert Nordic Center.

The Buffaloes overturned Vermont’s 54-point advantage on the last day of competition to win with 708 points. Utah took second with 665 points, followed by UVM (653), Denver (629) and Dartmouth (594). Middlebury finished 10th in the 21-team field.

Panther women's hockey nets playoff bid vs. Norwich

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s hockey team lost a tough, 2-1 game to Bowdoin in Sunday’s NESCAC playoff final, but the Panthers this week still find themselves in a familiar position — preparing for an NCAA Division III tournament game for the 11th time in program history.

Panther men's basketball win first round of NCAA tournament

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s basketball team used stingy first-half defense and key late-game plays in Saturday’s first-round NCAA Division III tournament game to hold off visiting Curry, 68-66.

The Panthers will face SUNY-Cortland (24-4) this coming Saturday in the second round. The game will be played in Cortland, the time was not announced before the Independent’s deadline.

Panther skiers third at winter carnival

HANCOCK/RIPTON — The Panther ski team finished in third place this past weekend at the 90th annual Middlebury College winter carnival. Vermont won the event with 933 points, followed by Dartmouth (859), Middlebury (766) and New Hampshire (734).

Panther women’s hoop defeats Bates, makes league semis

MIDDLEBURY — For the first time since 2002, the Middlebury College women’s basketball team is going to the NESCAC final four, courtesy of the No. 4 Panthers’ 75-64 home quarterfinal win over No. 5 Bates on Saturday.

Middlebury (14-11) will meet No. 3 Williams (21-4) on Saturday at Amherst, while No. 8 Bowdoin (14-10) will take on the No. 2 host school Amherst (24-1). The winners meet Sunday.

Panther men advance to NESCAC semis

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s basketball team pulled away down the stretch of Saturday’s NESCAC quarterfinal vs. Wesleyan to win, 61-49, and potentially set up rematches with both teams that have defeated the Panthers this winter.
