VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen have scheduled a public informational meeting for this coming Tuesday on their proposed $1.45 million bond to fund a new 4,611-square-foot police station on North Main Street.

City residents will vote on May 14 on the police station bond proposal and also join residents in neighboring towns to decide on a $600,000 loan proposal to fund new roofing for Vergennes Union High School (see related story).

VERGENNES — As expected, Vergennes aldermen on Tuesday warned a May 14 vote for a $1.45 million bond to fund a new 4,611-square-foot police station on North Main Street, one that will cost taxpayers $400,000 less than the proposal that was narrowly defeated on Town Meeting Day.

The plan calls for savings of about $300,000 in construction costs over the initial proposal, mainly due to a building redesign that cuts out a little more than 1,300 square feet, but also due to savings on site development and land costs. The project cost is now roughly $1.55 million.

VERGENNES — Vergennes residents on Tuesday dealt the $1.85 million proposal for a new North Main Street police station a narrow defeat, 302-292, a result that left city officials up in the air about their next step.

Mayor-elect Bill Benton said aldermen would take up the issue at their next meeting, probably March 26. He does think most residents believe the city’s police force needs to move out of its tiny City Hall headquarters.

VERGENNES — City leaders are inching closer to identifying a site for a new Vergennes police station. At their Feb. 21 meeting, aldermen sliced five of 13 potential sites from a working list they had been eyeing.

City Manager Mel Hawley said on Thursday the five sites that did not make the cut met the original criteria set by the council — they fronted on a Class 1 or 2 road, offered at least 1 usable acre, and were not in a residential area — but were the lowest ranked by aldermen on the single basis of location.
