Vergennes sets public forum on 6,000-square-foot police station

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen agreed on Tuesday to adopt a 6,076-square-foot, 24-room building as a working model for a new police station, and they set a Nov. 27 public informational meeting to explain to residents why city officials believe the building is necessary and hear feedback from taxpayers.

Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel said the draft plan has won approval from law enforcement officials around Vermont and is designed to meet the needs for a 10-man city department now and for the foreseeable future.

Bigger Bristol police district eyed

BRISTOL — The Police Advisory Board plans to take a first step to gauge public support for expanding the police district beyond the village limits to include the entire town of Bristol.

The board this week announced it will conduct a survey of Bristol residents outside of Holley Hall on Election Day.

Heffernan gets 33 months in jail of gun crime

BRISTOL — A Bristol man who was originally charged with attempted murder in a 2011 shooting incident that apparently revolved around a heroin deal gone bad, has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and been sentenced to nearly three years in jail.

Dean C. Heffernan, 28, of Bristol was sentenced late last week in U.S. District Court in Rutland to 33 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.

BRISTOL — At its third crime forum last Wednesday at Mount Abraham Union High School, Bristol public safety officials introduced members of a steering committee charged with addressing a perceived increase in crime and drug use.

UPDATE: Middlebury man killed in shootout with police

MIDDLEBURY — After a six-hour standoff, a Middlebury man with a history of threatening others died on Thursday evening during a firefight with local police in the woods off Case Street.

George Demarais, 57, died after he allegedly goaded authorities to shoot him.

Bristol police call second crime forum

BRISTOL — The Bristol Police Department has scheduled its second forum on crime and drugs in Bristol. It will be held at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11 at Holley Hall. A third-party facilitator has agreed to manage the discussion.

Chief Kevin Gibbs will start off the forum by answering some questions that came up at the end of the last meeting on July 31 and since then.

Police on the lookout for counterfeit cash

BRISTOL — Police are urging local businesses and vendors at Addison County Fair and Field Days to be on the lookout for counterfeit $5 and $10 bills this week.

An anonymous tip led Bristol police and the U.S. Secret Service agents on Tuesday to arrest Mildred Martin, 29, of Bristol for possession of a regulated drug.

But that’s not why the federal and local authorities stopped Martin, according to Bristol Police Chief Kevin Gibbs. They were informed that she and another person had counterfeit money and a firearm on national forest land.

Vermont State Police Log: Thieves strike at Cornwall camp

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police on Aug. 2 received a report of the theft of approximately $14,305 worth of property from a private camp off Swamp Road in Cornwall.

A 2004 Kubota Orange RV900 ATV worth $9,000 was stolen, as well as generators, tools, radiators from trucks, batteries, a 12-foot aluminum boat, chainsaws, 300 feet of copper welding cable, and scrap aluminum and metal.

Middlebury Police Log: Police euthanize strange skunk

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police investigated, with Department of Fish & Wildlife officials, a report of a skunk acting strangely in the Jayne Court neighborhood on Aug. 5. State officials determined the skunk, which they euthanized, was either injured or rabid. Police said no one in the neighborhood reported being scratched or bitten by the animal.

In other recent action, Middlebury police:

•  Were informed that a pad had been stolen off a crane parked off MacIntyre Lane on July 30.

Vergennes Police Log: City canine unit called to search vehicles for presence of drugs

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Police Department canine twice recently alerted on the presence of drugs in vehicles, and citations were issued as a result, Vergennes police said.

On July 30 in Vergennes police saw a car being fueled at a city gas station by a man they said they knew had a suspended license. Police said the operator and a passenger seemed impaired, and they obtained permission to search the car after the dog alerted on it.
