Vergennes Police Log: Northlands student accused of providing alcohol

VERGENNES — Vergennes police on March 24 cited a 22-year-old Northlands Job Corps student for providing alcohol to minors. The citation followed an incident in which police also gave court diversion paperwork to five Northlands students for alleged underage drinking.

Cited for the providing charge was Elliot Glacum of Bath, N.Y. Police said the incident started with a report at around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday that a male was lying on the ground near Otter Creek. When police arrived they said the person in question, a 20-year-old Northlands student, was also vomiting.

Bristol Police Log: Woman cited for obtaining money dishonestly

BRISTOL — Bristol police cited Rachael Cormicle, 26, of Bristol for false pretenses on March 13.

The police allege that on two occasions she had convinced cashiers at Shaw’s Supermarket that she had purchased items in the store that were faulty or not what she wanted, when, in actuality, she hadn’t actually purchased the items. The store gave her a $40 gift card on one occasion and a $70 gift card on another, said Police Chief Kevin Gibbs.

Sorrell seeks aid to battle pornography

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Attorney General Bill Sorrell is asking the state Legislature to allocate $200,000 for additional manpower to investigate and prosecute child pornography offenders, this in view of the fact that only a small fraction of such cases are able to be pursued under current budget constraints.

Starksboro man pleads guilty to DUI

MIDDLEBURY — A Starksboro man was sentenced in Addison County District Court on Monday to 100 hours in jail, three years of probation and court costs after pleading guilty to a fifth drunk-driving offense and to reckless endangerment for driving while under the influence of alcohol with his 7-year-old son in his vehicle.

Judge Helen M. Toor also imposed alcohol-related conditions on Ruby Brace Road resident Marland Brewer, 46, and imposed court costs on him. Toor ordered Brewer to start serving his jail time on March 29 at the Marble Valley Correctional Facility.

Bridport man draws sentence in sex case

MIDDLEBURY — A Bridport man at a Monday hearing in Addison District Court was sentenced by Judge Helen Toor to six months of house arrest for lewd and lascivious conduct with a child in May 2009.

That six-month sentence given to Jason Ethier, 29, was part of a three-to-15-year suspended sentence agreed to in a plea deal between Ethier’s attorney and state prosecutors for an offense involving a Bristol girl who was 14 at the time.

Vermont State Police Log: Accident leads to several citations for area men

ADDISON COUNTY — On Tuesday, March 6, at around 5 p.m. Vermont State Police at the New Haven barracks received a phone call alerting them to an intoxicated driver in Addison. A short time later a second phone call alerted police to a vehicle off Route 23 in Weybridge, and troopers determined that it was the vehicle observed in Addison.

Middlebury Police Log: Police investigate carpet cleaning scam

MIDDLEBURY — A Middlebury woman told Middlebury police that last Saturday morning she received a call from a female who said she was with the Kirby vacuum cleaner company, and she was offering a deal on carpet cleaning.

The Middlebury woman made an appointment to have her carpets cleaned later that day, and upon doing so the female asked if she would be home alone. The Middlebury woman responded that she would not be home alone.

Vergennes Police Log: City police arrest two Northlands students on drug charges

VERGENNES — Vergennes police arrested two Northlands Job Corps students last week in what they said were related drug cases.

On March 5 police cited Daniel R. Jetty, 19, of Northville, N.Y., for possession of marijuana. Police said Jetty had in his possession 27 individually wrapped bags of marijuana, and that he was lodged in the Marble Valley Correctional Center.

Two locals injured in Route 30 crash

'Initiation beatings' alleged at Northlands Job Corps

VERGENNES — According to several sources, a Northlands Job Corps dormitory has been the scene of regular beatings given to new students by other students over at least the past six months, while at least some Northlands staff and supervisors are aware of and apparently have failed to take steps to halt the violence.
