BREAKING NEWS: Governor Douglas announces he will not seek reelection in 2010

MONTPELIER — Gov. James Douglas, a Middlebury Republican who has provided almost continuous service to the state since 1973, announced this morning that he will not seek a fifth term in Vermont’s top elected office.

Speaking in the governor’s ceremonial office in the Statehouse and flanked by many members of his cabinet, Douglas in an 11-minute speech stated that he was ready to move.

Local producers voice concern over food safety bill

ADDISON COUNTY — A bill passed late last month by the U.S. House of Representatives could take steps to improve the safety of American food. Local foods advocates say the goal is laudable, but if it makes it into law provisions of the bill would place unfair burdens on small farmers and food producers in Vermont.
