State commits to passenger rail through Middlebury by 2017

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont will proceed with sufficient rail improvements to re-establish passenger train traffic along its western corridor from Rutland through Middlebury to Burlington by 2017, and the state will proceed on that track regardless of the prospects for federal funding.

Middlebury received a bushel basket full of good economic news this week in three announcements: Vermont Hard Cider, LLC was bought by a global Irish company that will strengthen the company in its effort to stay atop the national hard cider market and expand its operations and job growth here in Middlebury; the Vermont Transportation Department announced it will finance the Western Corridor rail project without waiting for federal assistance and have it completed by 2017; and the town of Middlebury was given control of managing the railroad tunnel project that will rebuild the overpasses

City rail depot may move at last

VERGENNES — The long-planned move of the roughly 160-year-old former Vergennes railroad station to the Ferrisburgh commuter lot erected by the Agency of Transportation (VTrans) may finally happen this fall.

According to recent VTrans emails, some provided by City Manager Mel Hawley, VTrans and Department of Buildings and General Services (BGS) officials are putting finishing touches on plans on which contractors could submit bids.

Middlebury to host railroad fans

MIDDLEBURY — Train enthusiasts from throughout New England will chug into Middlebury this weekend to celebrate the rich history of one of Vermont’s most prominent railroad systems.

The draw is the 25th annual convention of the Rutland Railroad Historical Society (RRHS), which takes place this Saturday and Sunday at the Middlebury Inn.

Railroad lobby picks up steam

RUTLAND — There was a pro-rail rally in Rutland on Monday in honor of a federal official who came to see just how enthusiastic area and state business and government leaders were about the prospect of rail in the state’s western corridor.

They were pretty enthusiastic.
