County home sales seeing an upward trend

ADDISON COUNTY — After years of stagnation, the region’s real estate market has in more recent years shown signs of life, according both to statistics and longtime Vergennes real estate appraiser Bill Benton, also Middlebury’s town assessor.

According to data provided by Benton, in the past three years — and especially in 2017 — the number of homes sold in Addison County has increased annually, as has the median sales price (defined as the most common price at which homes sell, not the average).

Addison buys a new fire truck

ADDISON — The Addison selectboard and Addison Volunteer Fire Department executive officers at a special March 19 selectboard meeting at the fire station agreed to buy a new fire truck for the town.

The new $338,640 truck will replace the department’s 1994 truck. According to meeting minutes, the department had $82,000 in its truck fund, and the town will finance the difference with a 15-year, 2.9-percent loan through the National Bank of Middlebury.

Path cleared to develop high-profile city property

VERGENNES — A settlement of a site-contamination case should soon pave the way for the restoration of prominent, but long vacant, buildings next to the Otter Creek falls in Vergennes, according to the structures’ owner.

Ferrisburgh resident David Shlansky, the principal in Shenandoah LLC, the company that owns the former Haviland Shade Roller Mill and its nearby Annex, said he now hopes in the months to come to revive plans to put shops, office space and condominiums in the two historic Canal Street properties.
